Actors studio in Cardiff

Description

Living Pictures Acting Studios 2017 : Cardiff, Wales
The Living Pictures studios are starting up again and will consist of 11 sessions over four months. They will led by Robbie Bowman with some classes also being led by Elen Bowman.
These studios are a chance to learn, to try out, to question and to put into practice.
We focus on three practitioners, Stanislavski, Meisner and Michael Chekhov and coupled with that will be bringing in NLP and the latest in Neuroscience that Robbie has been researching as part of his Arts Council of Wales - Creative Wales Award 2016.
At Living Pictures, we don’t believe in there being just one way to create theatre, to make art, to be free as a performer. There are, however, some very useful tools that can be gleaned from each practitioner and we see this as a way to develop your tool kit and deepen your awareness of self and others.
Each session will consist of specific games that have applications to being an actor, acting exercises and scene/monologue work.
Dates:
February : 12th, 26th
March: 12th, 19th, 26th
April: 7th, 11th,23rd
May: 7th, 14th, 21st.
Times: 4pm-7pm
Where: WMC (Cardiff)
Cost:
£150 for people new to the studios for all 11 sessions
£100 for returning Studio Members

Quote:
I feel it's vital to continue training and developing as a working actor. The Living Pictures actor's studio enables you to explore new approaches and consolidate your work with a progressive environment in which you can truly challenge yourself. Equally valuable is the opportunity to discuss and practically address performance difficulties. I cannot recommend highly enough the knowledge, experience and confidence this actor's studio can offer.

Art Exhibition \'Breastfeed\' by Leanne Pearce

Art Exhibition 'Breastfeed' by Leanne Pearce, Leyden Gallery

  • London, London
  • combined arts, visual arts
  • Leyden Gallery info@leydengallery.com

Description

Breastfeed (1 March - 1 April)
An exhibition of paintings by Leanne Pearce + Accompanying Programme

Leanne Pearce looks at breastfeeding both from a personal and professional standpoint. Guided by her own experience of being a mother of two daughters, the artist engages with the subject of maternity and its relation to contemporary society. The image of a mother feeding her child has many historical references, one of the most famous being the religious iconographic representation of the Madonna and Child. Yet, public breastfeeding appears to remain a controversy in the modern world. The increasing interest in this subject matter stems from the contrast between female power and vulnerability, the intimacy of the moment, the challenge of motherhood and the male gaze that tends to sexualise female breasts. Through her paintings, Pearce aims to portray this precious maternal bond in flesh and to reshape our perception of breastfeeding. She depicts herself with her children and other mothers with their babies in the moment that makes them equally strong and fragile. Ultimately, Pearce embodies both the complexity and lightness of being a mother and an artist at the same time.

Breastfeeding – An Urgent Topic in Contemporary Society

To complement Pearce’s series of work, Leyden Gallery is hosting a series of gallery talks, performances, and panel discussions running throughout the course of the exhibition during March and on International Women’s Day. Join the conversation!

Timeline

Accompanying events will take place on the following dates: 2nd March – Desperate Artwives Takeover; 8th March – International Women’s Day Debate with Anna McNay; 11th March – Panel Debate; 17th March – Sybarite Nights Maternity/Milk Special; 25th March – Mass Breastfeed Sit-In with Mothers Meetings Group; 1st April – Finissage Party.

Pre-booking is recomended info@leydengallery.com

Description

Lewis Chaplin
Mercury
Feb 1-19 2017
PV: Feb 1, 6-9pm

roaming projects is proud to present Mercury, an ongoing body of work by London-based artist Lewis Chaplin. Mercury shows images made of Tristan da Cunha, an overseas British territory situated in the South Atlantic. An archipelago of active volcanoes, it is the most remote inhabited island in the world and populated by less than 300 people. Chaplin’s ethnographic approach uses photographs of Tristan to speak about elusiveness, isolation and a consecration of distance within the photographic frame. Tristan is an extremely private community, accessible only, with permission, by an infrequent week-long boat voyage - meaning that we must gaze upon it through small glimpses of visibility, a process which renders visible the acts of framing, aestheticising and abstracting at work within the creation of images.

Getting Out of the Audience - You'd be a fool not to!, Jonathan Kay - World Famous Fool

  • South East, Brighton
  • dance, interdisciplinary arts, music, theatre
  • Stephanie stephanie@jonathankay.co.uk

Description

Jonathan Kay - World Famous Fool

is coming to

Brighton! (and Frome, Hamburg and London!)

Having spent over 30 years developing  and teaching his structure of Fooling, Jonathan is an adept master at this work. He will cajole, caress  and crack open The Fool residing deep within all of us. He will take you gently by the hand and lead you into a discovery of your inner world.

With Jonathan Kay workshops, the initial point of entry is called ‘Getting out of the Audience’, a short weekend workshop where you can ‘dip your toes into the water’ and find out what it means to Fool on a stage. The other workshops generally last for five days.

It can be a wonderful catalyst for change, knowledge, growth and fun.

The best thing about these workshops whether you come for a weekend or a week is that you don’t have to have performer aspirations. This suits everyone with an interest to explore themselves and the world of the Fool within a performance space.

Perhaps you’re a curious individual, someone in business, an entrepreneur, someone in the mental health sector, the learning sector, a theatre company or unemployed. This work is attractive to many because of the nature of Fooling.

Brighton - 25th-26th Feb (Open to all)
Frome - 4th-5th March (Open to all)
Hamburg - 13th-17th March (Open to all)
London - 28th April - 2nd May (Performers only)

Casting Call – Ellie’s Extraordinary Adventure, The Berry Theatre

  • South West
  • libraries, literature, music, theatre
  • Daniel Hill drama@eastleigh.gov.uk

Description

Writer: Matt Beames
Director:
Daniel Hill
Composer:
David Lewington

Rehearsal Dates: 3rd April – 8th April 2017
Performances Dates: 10th – 20th April 2017
Fee:
£447.50 p/w plus accommodation

As part of The Berry Theatre’s Storytelling Festival a newly commissioned play will tour libraries throughout Southampton and Eastleigh in April 2017.  Ellie’s Extraordinary Adventure is a play full of puppetry and song, and will follow the journey of Ellie as she journeys into and through many different books to find her lost brother and get both of them home in time for tea.  The production is aimed at a family audience, ages 4+.

Ellie’s brother Ollie is always reading, and when he does not come downstairs for tea one day, Ellie’s discovers that he has literally fallen inside a book and become lost!  By accident Ellie follows, and so begins an epic quest through a myriad stories, to find her brother and get them both home in time for tea.  Along the way Ellie will meet other characters (including Nokey-Poke the Snufflesnark and The Great Librarian), some of whom are quite human and others who are very much not.  At last Ellie finds her way to the Great Library, the place where all books, all stories and all worlds meet.  Here she at last finds Ollie, and finds the book that will take them both home.

The production will be approximately 45 minutes long and will tour to 10 libraries over a 10 day period.  The play is being written for a single performer and will involve multiple characters, some of which will be portrayed using puppetry.

We are casting for the following role:

Multi-Rolling (playing age 16-25)

We are looking for an energetic female actor who will play multiple roles in a storytelling style.  We are looking for a performer with puppetry experience, ability to sing to a good standard and preferably able to play a musical instrument.

There will be a workshop audition W/C 13th March 2017

Submissions should be sent to drama@eastleigh.gov.uk

fb: Proactive Dance

Gender inequality. We trivialise it. We minimise it. We normalise it. We justify it. We excuse it. We allow it as well as deny it. Even defend it in some cases.

All women have experienced vocal or physical assault in their lives. Walking down the street, dancing at a party, sitting in the doctors waiting room, or picking your kids up from school.
Western society consists of unwritten behavioural rules and norms which govern the ways we interact with one another, and enable cultural understanding. However, built into this invisible ruleset are norms which decide how we treat people perceived female differently from everyone else. In the west, and increasingly in other parts of the world, we are image obsessed. We are bombarded daily by a system which is designed to make women feel that they are never good enough; designed to justify gender inequality. This not only takes us away from who we are, but also trivialises the misogyny women suffer, whether in the workplace or in popular culture.

What Pro Active Dance aims to do is:
Present relatable experiences of women who have suffered any form of structural violence, however small or big, and to express it in an artistic yet accessible form.  The intention is to prepare in a 5-10 minute, site-specific performance designed to raise awareness of the issues we raise.

The aim is also to breakdown stereotypes of that a LGBT person looks like, or can be - because there is no absolute definition; as the project shows. ON TOUR NOW

OUTCOME: LGBT Portraits - Photography Exhibition on Tour

Description

We're excited to welcome Outcome LGBT Portraits by Tom Dingley to Lancaster University Library, as part of LGBT History Month.

The Library
Lancaster University
Lancaster
LA1 4YH

Two years in development, Outcome is  a photographic project of portraits of gay, lesbian, bi and transgender (LGBT) people from a variety of different backgrounds, holding a picture of themselves as a child.  Aimed at LGBT people on the cusp of coming out, to show that it does get better, the project is now a touring exhibition, and a book published by Arachne Press

Photographer Tom Dingley started his #Outcome project in response to his concern at the lack of positive role models for young people on the cusp of coming out.  He decided to photograph LGBT people with the attributes for their everyday life – their work, or their interests; and holding a picture of themselves as a child.  The message is,no matter how hard it is growing up, no matter who you were, you become who you become, and you are amazing.

Get involved! Photographer Tom Dingley will be taking photographs to add to the Outcome Portfolio on the final day of the show, 15 February. If you are LGBT, book your slot to become part of this iconic show by contacting Tom @OutcomeLGBT or tom_dingley@hotmail.co.uk.

New intensive Upholstery course in Richmond during Feb half term

  • London, Surrey
  • crafts, combined arts
  • Jenny Urwin art@racc.ac.uk

Description

Our new upholstery course offers you the chance to finally get round to upgrading that chair you’ve rescued from the charity shop!

Over five days in February, you’ll work on your own project – and learn techniques for either modern or traditional upholstery, depending on the type of chair you want to work on. You will learn how to accurately take measurements of your chair and make a pattern, strip your chair, treat the wood, make up new padding and stuffing, and learn upholstery stitching techniques to ensure your new fabric stands the test of time and looks great on your chair.

Upholstery, especially traditional, is quite slow-going, but you should be able to get either a small armchair, drop-in chair or footstool completed within five days.

If you need advice on what type of chair to bring in, please email us at art@racc.ac.uk, or alternatively you can email us a photo of your chosen project to check it is suitable.

Please wear sturdy shoes with thick soles as there may be tacks on the floor, and clothes you don’t mind getting dusty. Please bring a notebook, pen or pencil and something to photograph your project with – a camera phone is fine. If you want to bring your chosen fabric for the chair you can, alternatively if you want to wait for advice from the tutor on the first day, you can order some specific upholstery fabric which could arrive the next day, or you can source some yourself during the week.

All materials provided except top fabric covering and trimmings.

Description

Love singing?…then join us for this spontaneous singing adventure!

The Voice Energy project (a vocal group accompanied by a tap dancer, beatboxer) invites new members to join their singing rehearsals. "Our vision is to sing current material, create innovative arrangements, improvise, inspire and use the body as an instrument to accompany the voice."

To register your place & more details, please visit our website HERE (http://ift.tt/2hVOSoQ)

Why to join us? - we are the only vocal group in London that is accompanied by a tap dancer and beatboxer; - we regularly perform at the Southbank Centre and all over London; - we are collaborating with other inspiring artists and musicians.

This session can be taken as a one-off experience, but mainly as an opportunity to connect with like-minded people, get to know our style and consider the possibility of joining our project for the new term.

starting: Monday, 30th January at 7pm in Bethnal Green // and 6th & 13th February

Testimonial:

“What a great, enjoyable and rewarding experience. Seeing us all singing, laughing, concentrating and sharing with one another and everyone else the joy and energy that a group of voices can produce; a beautiful vision.” - Jess
