Paul Nash and the Wittenham Clumps - Walks and Talks

Paul Nash and the Wittenham Clumps - Walks and Talks

  • South East
  • visual arts
  • Christopher Baines info@nashclumps.org

Description

For the artist Paul Nash (1889-1946), Oxfordshire's wooded hills, the Wittenham Clumps, were a major source of inspiration. As the Tate's Paul Nash exhibition approaches, Christopher Baines will lead two special walks around the Wittenham Clumps, exploring Nash's enduring fascination with this landscape and the places where he worked. Each event will begin with an illustrated talk.

September was the month that the Nash family visited the Wittenham Clumps on holidays before the First World War, so the countryside will look much as it did when it was discovered by Paul Nash and his artist brother, John.

Christopher Baines runs the Paul Nash & Wittenham Clumps website with artist Anna Dillon. He has given talks about Paul Nash at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and has been interviewed about Nash for the BBC television programmes ‘Paul Nash: The Ghosts of War’ and ‘Countryfile’.

Saturday 3rd September and Saturday 10th September 2016 at 10am. Tickets £15. Further information and booking at the Paul Nash and Wittenham Clumps website: www.nashclumps.org

Call For Volunteers

  • South East
  • interdisciplinary arts, photography, visual arts
  • Rosie rosie.diephaven@gmail.com

Description

Diep~Haven, cross-Channel festival of contemporary creation, is looking for volunteers to help us to realise our 2016 edition of the festival when it comes to Newhaven this September.

This year the theme of the festival is ‘portrait’ and in response to this theme we have put together an exciting programme of exhibitions and events that will take place at different sites around the town.

The main focus of our exhibitions is to present artwork created by the contemporary artists who were in residence in around Newhaven and Dieppe earlier this year. Each of these artists responded to our call to produce new work that was made in collaboration with, or in response to local residents in both towns. It is important for us that the presentation of the artworks maintains this strong connection with community and place.

In light of this, and in addition to day-to-day tasks, volunteers will have the opportunity to engage in a research project exploring the history of community portraiture in Newhaven, including the possibility of research trips to local archives and other relevant sites. Volunteers will also be able to meet the exhibiting artists and find out more about their work.

On a day-to-day basis volunteers will be responsible for greeting visitors to the exhibitions, responding to general enquiries about the exhibition and collecting visitor feedback. There will also be opportunities for volunteers to be involved in exhibition installation, communications and assisting at events.

We would ask that volunteers are available for a minimum average of 3.5 hours per week in the run up to and during the festival, between 22 August and 2 October.

We are able to cover reasonable travel costs for all volunteers that do not live within walking distance of the exhibitions.

For more information or to express your interest in working with us, please contact Rosie at rosie.diephaven@gmail.com

Artist Call Out - Platform for Emerging Arts

'Desire Caught by the Tail' by Pablo Picasso

Description

The Nunnery Gallery is proud to host the first UK production of Picasso’s rarely produced play Desire Caught by the Tail in two exclusive outdoor performances to mark the end of their summer event programme.

Award-winning company LUXE will present Picasso’s highly stylised and surrealist piece of theatre, directed by founder and Bow Arts artist Cradeaux Alexander – recently praised for his “extraordinary” direction by Indie London.

Written in occupied Paris in 1941, the play is bawdy and burlesque. With characters including The Tart, The Onion, Big Foot, Thin Anxiety and Silence, Picasso’s play is a play of misery, discomfort, anguish, hunger and passion that is caught in the impossibility of its fulfilment. It is outrageous and funny, with a lyrical spoken language which incorporates high poetics and absurdist juxtapositions.

Desire Caught by the Tailhad its first public reading in 1944 and featured performances by Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Michel Leiris and Raymond Queneau. It was most recently performed at the Guggenheim, New York in 2012, who previously hosted the play in 1984 when the players included Louise Bourgeois and David Hockney.

Founded by Artistic Director Cradeaux Alexander, LUXE is an award-winning company dedicated to experimenting with form and theatrical language. LUXE’s performances explore the space between theatre, visual art and performance.  Their work has enticed its audience to discuss their productions “in more detail and at greater length than any other play we we’ve seen recently” (Peter Brown, Scene4 Magazine).

The play runs in the Bow Arts courtyard on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 August at 7.30pm (doors from 7pm).

Tickets available on eventbrite

Concessionary Rates: £8
(Bow Arts artists, students and over 65s)

Description

The Writers’ Lab

Mondays, 7pm - 9pm

This well-established workshop that meets two to three weeks per month (always on the same day) is for experienced writers - not necessarily professional/published, but with a track record of literary creation.

At each meeting, several of our number present work they are currently developing outside of the group, in order to receive honest, detailed, managed feedback and opinion from the other group members, in a supportive environment.

There’s no requirement to attend every session, but most writers who use the group find that attending regularly helps to keep their skills sharp, whether it’s their own work or other people’s under consideration.

Held in the Royal Festival Hall, the groups have been running for several years and have a family atmosphere. Group-members have collaborated on projects, including performance readings and the publication of anthologies of work.

Writers of all stripes are welcome. Recent input has included work from writers of chick-lit, literary fiction, military novels, poetry, short stories, children’s fiction, memoir, computer game scripts, theatre monologues, thrillers and experimental writing.

Please make contact before attending.

Description

Warwickshire Libraries’ are delighted to announce that artist Ann Loscombe has been appointed as the first ‘FUSION’ Artist in Residence, as part of the Warwickshire Poetry Voices project.

Ann will begin her residency at Kenilworth Library on Tuesday 2nd August, and will spend time creating a brand new artwork inspired by poetry, as well as local libraries in Warwick District and their communities.

During August, Ann will be visiting libraries across Warwick District, inviting local people of all ages to join her to read and talk about poetry.

Ann continues “I would like people to come along to the Library and tell me about a poem that makes them laugh or cry, brings back memories or has helped them through a special time. The artwork that will be created at the end of this project will be determined entirely by the input of the participants. That means that everyone who joins in and finds a poem will play a part in the finished piece.”

Timetable for library visits:

Fort Process festival seeks proposals for sound art

Description

OVERVIEW

The second Fort Process sound art and experimental music festival is taking place at Newhaven Fort on September 3rd 2016. The festival is calling for proposals of sonic works to interpret its broad theme of movement. Download the submission brief and submit an application via email to fortprocess@gmail.combefore the deadline - 23:59 on August 7th 2016.

OPEN CALL: BRIEF

We are calling for sonic works to interpret the theme of movement at this year’s Fort Process festival. We are interested in receiving proposals for all forms of sound-based art including: sound installation, sound sculpture, kinetic art, aeolian sculpture, land art. We are looking for work that uses sound as its primary medium. For this call-out, we are not seeking works that are performance-based – we have already programmed a vast amount of performances at the festival. You may propose work with performative elements but this call-out is actively seeking works that are installation-based or long-form. Audio-visual and cross-disciplinary work will be considered and you are free to interpret the brief as you wish. This year’s theme is movement, with a particular emphasis on its relationship with sound, so be sure to ensure your proposal tackles this on some level. You can interpret this literally or conceptually; seriously or with humour. We are looking for works that will critically reflect upon the qualities of the fort (acoustical, topographical, psychogeographical, historical, etc.) and look to complement the rest of our diverse programme.

Brexit Impacts on the Arts Survey

  • East Midlands, London
  • crafts, combined arts, dance, film, interdisciplinary arts, libraries, literature, museums, photography, music, theatre, visual arts
  • John Nicholls john@artsquarter.co.uk

Description

Arts Quarter has now launched its survey inviting arts organisations to share insights into possible impacts on the arts and cultural sectors on the UK's vote to leave the European Union.

What has followed since 23rd June has been a period of significant change and the start of a period of reflection about what this shift in our position in the world will mean for all of us in the sector.  There has been a raft of predictions and some initial economic tremors. What lies ahead remains uncertain.

At this time and in advance of the process of exit commencing in earnest in the Autumn, we are inviting arts professionals to share their views and insights on what this change in our will mean in its broadest sense but critically looking at the financial implications across fundraised and earned revenues in the immediate and medium term.

Organisations and independent artists are invited to share their views and predictions on how Brexit is affecting and might continue to impact on the sector and critically, what needs to happen over the coming years to enable arts and culture in the UK to thrive.

To take part in this online survey, click here

This survey will remain live until 26th August 2016.  Findings will be published before the end of September.

Performance: "Henriette Barthes: In Reference To"

Description

Henriette Barthes: In Reference To
July 27, 2016 6-9pm

First Performance in the UK by Berlin based artist Lars Hering.
Hosted by PANDO@EnclaveLab
50 Resolution Way, SE8 4AL

Lars Hering explores interdisciplinary art and curatorial practices that materialize through text, performance and experimental methods of display. After reading Roland Barthes’s Camera Lucida, Hering became intrigued by the withheld photograph of Barthes’ mother, which, having never been exposed, exists nonetheless as a subjective imagining in the reader’s mind. Following interviews Hering conducted with international Barthes experts, the descriptions were written in a conversational format. In his work 'Henriette Barthes: In reference to... (2015)', Hering staged a dinner in which guests were invited to read subjective descriptions of the image. Through this staged discussion a spoken image of Barthes’ mother emerged.

PANDO intends to re-enact this dinner once more, but with a set of computers sitting around a table hosting invited proxies. These proxies are collectives such as FormContent and VS VS VS. Situated only virtually in the room, each proxy reads sections of the text as spectators observe from the periphery while eating from a provided buffet. The rhetorical performance becomes a proxy of the dicourse between experts, furthering the description from thing and amassing subjective readings to an unknown effect.

Lars Hering considers the performance as representing a possible strategy to circumvent concealment. Spoken-word is a medium, which can be memorized – in this case by both audience and participants. There is no censorship for memory, which means there is limited censorship for the ekphrasis.

Interviewed experts are:

Prof. Dr. Geoffrey Batchen, Victoria University of Wellington

Prof. Dr. Patrizia Lombardo, Université de Genève

Prof. Dr. Michael Moriarty, Cambridge University

Prof. Dr. Magali Nachtergael , Université Paris 13

Prof. Dr. Marjorie Perloff, Stanford University

Compose for Electric Guitar with Ludi Quartet Kernow

Description

Sound and Music have joined forces with Adrian Lee and the Ludi Quartet Kernow to offer composers the chance to develop new short-piece works that explore the 'expressive qualities' of the electric guitar.

The works will be developed through a series of workshops in Cornwall, in autumn 2016 and spring 2017, during which composers will work in close collaboration with the performers supported by an experienced composer mentor.

The electric guitar has an incredible range of scope, from the virtuosity and exuberance of soloist expression to  percussive, experimental and textural variety produced by the use of extended techniques, customised pedals and other forms of player-operated sonic manipulation and merits the serious attention of non-player composers.

As part of this project Adrian Lee and the Ludi Quartet Kernow aim to bring together up to three player - and non-player -composers alike to explore the potential of this entirely new, contemporary ensemble medium, premiering the resulting work at Truro Festival in spring 2017.

Planes: Scratch

Description

PLANES is a live tuning into missing things. Using a single aircraft receiver, Richard navigates instances of peculiar absence, from the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines 370 over the Indian Ocean to the suicide of his sister.

Flanked on either side by two musicians and with live aircraft signals resonating through the room, interference, as in most recollection, is likely. Timothy Thornton’s ghostly score is a network of procedures and failsafes, designed to persist, just about.

SCRATCH allows artists to test ideas and get audience feedback. The performance you will see is a work in development. Come explore and be the first to discover the future of theatre.

Age Recommendation: 16+
Running Time: 45 mins

The things they do: Symposium about Ragnar Kjartansson’s work, Barbican Centre

  • London, Silk Street

  • Emma Chiplin Emma.chiplin@barbican.org.uk

Description

29 July 2016, 10am - 5pm
Barbican Garden Room and Conservatory
Book tickets here

Join us for an experimental one-day symposium, curated by Nicholas Ridout from QMUL and Professor Joe Kelleher from the University of Roehampton, in response to the exhibition Ragnar Kjartansson in the Art Gallery this summer.

Kjartansson’s work brings together live performance, music, film, painting and drawing and often includes experiments in repetition and endurance, contemporary music, Icelandic literature and romantic melancholy.

This day of performances, presentations and conversations from artists, writers and academics will explore the theme of appropriation and is inspired by Kjartansson’s interest in making art out of the things that other people do. Dressing up as Death to entertain children or playing the saddest song you know for six hours non-stop, Kjartansson’s staging of everyday and peculiar behaviours, in which memory, entertainment and personal connections are all thrown together, gives them a strange new life. At once sincere and ridiculous - a kind of theatre. Why does this move us?

Over the course of the day you might find yourself dropping in on a very long piano recital, watching how a famous philosopher takes a drink of water, or learning specialist techniques for cheating at cricket. These and other performance events are mixed together with a series of rich and informative talks about Kjartansson’s work, the pleasures of entertainment and about being ridiculous and sincere. There will also be plenty of time for conversation and participation throughout the day. Lunch is provided, and there will be a drink for everyone at the end of the day.

The symposium includes contributions from Emma Bennett, Karen Christopher, Broderick Chow, Richard DeDomenici, Laure Fernandez, Jordan McKenzie, Stacy Makishi, Madison Moore, Hayley Newman, Gary Stevens, Simon Vincenzi and David Williams.

Description

This unique week-long Summer School at OVADA offers an intensive development programme for artists and creative practitioners. Situated in OVADA’s vibrant warehouse space, participants will benefit from the knowledge and experience of different specialist tutors throughout the week. The first day will revisit fundamental drawing and mark-making skills that can then be developed into other media. The course then progresses through printmaking, painting and 3D sessions, with a day spent focusing on each of these areas. The final day will focus on professional development and talks by invited practicing artists, followed by an informal feedback session. The culmination of the course is a unique opportunity to exhibit the work that has been produced during the week in a pop-up Summer School exhibition at OVADA on 27-28 August 2016.

The course will accommodate a maximum of 12 participants to allow quality tutor time and ample ‘studio’ space. The small group size allows the tutors to focus on individual development within a structured yet responsive environment. The course is most suited to Intermediate Level; those wanting to learn new skills, improve on existing skills and take advantage of uninterrupted time to focus on their practice. Participants will be encouraged to take creative risks and to try new techniques. The course would also be advantageous to those expanding their portfolios or putting a body of work together for the first time.

Each of the 49 individual pieces will fit on one of HAND Studio’s packable, refillable, paper-topped tables, from where the artists will work on their creations. The table collection – HAND.01 – has been created in collaboration with paper pioneers G.F Smith and designed to ensure that inspiration is captured wherever it strikes, from the boot of a car to the centre of a creative studio.

The completed mural will be on display Manchester Craft & Design Centre from September 8th to October 30th 2016.

FREE Launch Event, Thursday 8th September, 6-8pm
