The board of Sound Sense, the UK professional association for community music and musicians, has announced that after a comprehensive search their next director is to be Åsa Malmsten.

Sound Sense chair Sam Dunkley says: "There was enormous interest in the post of director of Sound Sense, and we were flattered that so many applicants wanted the chance to run this organisation and to lead over 1000 amazing community musicians. There were some very strong candidates, but our recruitment panel members were unanimous in their final choice."

Cardiff-based producer/project manager Åsa Malmsten has a long history of work with Welsh National Opera, including a period as director of the Youth and Community department. She has worked for Charles Hazelwood's Paraorchestra and Friends, and most recently has been running the New Muni Arts Centre, a community driven venue at the heart of Pontypridd.

Åsa Malmsten says: "I am delighted and honoured to be chosen for this post. Sound Sense is an incredible organisation doing important work in community music. I am excited to be part of its future and look forward to take up post later this year.'

 Current Sound Sense director Kathryn Deane is set to retire from Sound Sense in December 2016, after more than 21 years' service to the organisation. She and Malmsten will work together from September to ensure a full and seamless transfer of activities so that the work of developing community music and supporting community musicians is not interrupted.
