In July we are reading Boris Groys’ Under the Gaze of Theory (2012) on the uses and abuses of theory in art practice. Boris Groys argues that theory is an unpopular and therefore ineffective form of advertisement for art. Theory for Groys is useful as a tool for artists to “explain what they are doing… to themselves” and to understand “what art actually is, and what the artist is supposed to do”. He begins with the premise that philosophical contemplation is a critique of art, while critical theory is in turn a critique of contemplation. For Groys the “true goal of every theory is to define the field of action we are called to undertake”. If “theory” is a call to action then it is an accessory to and a precondition and vindication of “practice”; theory is not only informative but transformative, in other words we “perform theory”. Groys addresses the absence of criteria for judging the success and failure in art, with conclusions about the value of art and its role in society and life and revolution.

[SYMPOSIUM] is a monthly free and open-access reading group for artists, curators, researchers and anyone interested in the intersections between art practice and critical theory. The book club takes place at The Field on every second Friday of the month. All decision-making is collective. Participants are encouraged to chair the reading group on a selective and voluntary basis. These events are free and open to everyone on condition that they commit to the reading. Participants need to download and print the shared document/s.

DRAFT EDINBURGH: Writers Call-Out

DRAFT EDINBURGH: Writers Call-Out, In Motion Theatre Company, in association with Theatre N16 & theSpaceUK

Description

DRAFT is a new writing development event for fresh ideas.

After becoming a successful fixture at London's Theatre N16, In Motion Theatre Company is bringing DRAFT to the Edinburgh Fringe in association with theSpaceUK on Sunday 14th August.

Are you going to be in Edinburgh in August? We're looking for 10 minute extracts from as-yet-unseen plays/ideas in development.

We'll select five extracts which will be explored and staged as script-in-hand readings in collaboration with professional directors and actors in one day. DRAFT places emphasis on writers developing their ideas and provides opportunities for varied feedback, including a table discussion prior to the event with other writers and directors to discuss inspiration and intentions behind their work.

DRAFT has no set theme - we're simply looking for work with strong dramatic potential. It's important that writers view their work as in development, with unanswered questions they'd be looking to explore through theDRAFTprocess.

Interested? Find out more information and how to apply via bit.ly/DRAFTN16.

The deadline for submissions is 10pm on Sunday 17th July.

Any questions should be sent to Jordan Blackwood, producer via jordan@theatren16.co.uk.

DRAFT EDINBURGH: Writers Call-Out

Photo Laboratory with Michael Wayne Plant on 4th & 18th of July

Description

Michael Wayne Plant is pleased to announce the commencement of a regular event. Every two weeks, he will lead evenings discussing photography, images and photographers. The idea behind these evenings, is that it is the photographer who needs upgrading, not the camera or photographic equipment. Once we learn the basic’s of photography, how do we get better as a photographer. Often it is through practice and hard work, it is also through discussing and looking at the work of other photographers, it is in finding what it is that you want to say as a photographer, in other words your voice. These evening sessions are designed to help you, discover yourself as a photographer, to work though your barriers and to explore ideas.

The idea of these evenings originated from a course that explored developing photography projects. We will be responsive to you as photographers and we will challenge your ideas, we will be opinionated and questioning, seeking to get to and explore the problems that you encounter as a photographer. While, we all have different approaches in developing our working methods, and barriers to achieving the photographs that we want to make, there are approaches to making images that will make this exploration process easier. We will be critiquing photographs, exploring compositional techniques, working methods, ideas and theories of photography. We are seeking to help you to develop your vision as a photographer. You will need to bring along a willingness to be open about your artistic process, to explore the issues that you struggle with. We will though this process, enable you to become a more fully realised photographer creating images that you are happy with and working with areas of photography that you love.

These evening sessions are experimental and will vary in content and style evolving as we progress.

Michael Wayne Plant is a Sony Global Imaging Ambassador and has extensive experience of both doing photography and teaching it.

Puppetry's future: outside the arts? Open Space 12 July Bristol

Puppetry's future: outside the arts? Open Space 12 July Bristol, Puppet Place, Unit 18 Albion Dockside Estate, Hanover Place Bristol BS1 6UT

Description

What Is the Future For Puppetry And Collaboration?

12 July 6pm Bristol

Puppet Place is a base for creative practitioners offering fabrication, rehearsal, and office space – but we want it to be more than this. The people who work and play within it, are a fantastic source of innovation and insight. We think this means we can do more, be better and create conditions for puppetry to thrive – a Collaborative Hub.

We are working with a diverse group of creatives exploring this topic under the BIG question: “Puppet Place – A Collaborative Hub?“ We have just started on this journey and we want different voices in the room before we go too far and are keen to test out our ideas with you!

We’re finding that each conversation leads us to new areas, questions and ideas.  We want to be provocative, and to push ourselves beyond our usual boundaries. The topic for this current phase is:

Does the future growth of puppetry lie outside the arts?

Puppetry is an artform that strides across boundaries, a powerful tool for self-expression and a vibrant artform. Its origins are ancient yet it reaches into the latest robotics and AI research. All these forms share the same basic principle of “bringing the inanimate to life”.

We recognise this: including animation, filmed puppetry, object manipulation as well as bunraku-style, string and rod marionette, shadow puppetry, ventriloquism, glove puppetry, automata and robotics within the puppetry family.

Puppetry faces similar preconceptions to animation, “it’s for kids” and creative robotics, “it’s niche”, also the same challenges: lack of investment and public platforms. We would like a conversation with the whole creative sector, puppetry, animation and robotics communities, to explore how we can learn from each other, work together to develop public engagement and articulate the value of what we do.

Join us on 12 July for an Open Space Conversation at Puppet Place

We are inviting submissions from visual artists to be featured in a group exhibition to be held at a beautiful exhibition space in Lithuania. The exhibition curated by ART PROJECTS EU aims to explore artists’ perceptions of Lithuania and what Lithuania represents to them. The project aims to explore the relationship between artists from various parts of the world and the idea of Lithuania as perceived by each artist and expressed through their individual works.

It is not necessary that you have visited or lived in Lithuania. Yet when you hear the name you might associate it with an experience, a feeling, a thought or an idea. We are inviting you to express your feelings, thoughts, impressions and ideas about Lithuania through art.

The project is inspired by multiculturalism, cultural diversity and exploration, and we are particularly interested in hearing from artists wishing to tackle cross-culturalism, acculturation and cultural syncretism with references to Lithuania or the Lithuanian culture.

Thought provoking, comic, entertaining and contemporary pieces are also welcome.

SUBMISSIONS:

The exhibition invites submissions from emerging and established talent, providing opportunities to international artists, photographers and moving image makers. Artists at all stages in their careers are welcome to apply.

FEES:

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Reviews of LSW:

'Excellent courses, staff and facilities. Equipment, machinery and tools that extend on what artists might not have as permanent in their studios for specific projects or intermittent needs for their practice.'

'London Sculpture workshop's range of classes and approach to learning and participation is outstanding. South East London needs its resources to be open to more people. Youngsters have so few opportunities to learn through the power of making. The new activities proposed by London Sculpture Workshop would open up their resources in just such a way and would fill a gap that is crying out to be filled.'

Mozart, Miller & More!

Description

Over 600 people came through the doors at the opening weekend of the Prescot Festival.

Swingshift Big Band and vocalist Chris James launched the 2016 festival in style on Friday, with an evening concert paying tribute to swing legends Glenn Miller and Frank Sinatra, who would have been 100 this year.

Saturday began reflectively, with an afternoon of events remembering Prescot’s role in the two world wars, including a Q&A with a former prisoner of war and ‘Prescot War Memorial at 100,’ a talk by historian Stephen Nulty.

The day ended with a moving performance of Mozart’s celebrated Requiem, performed by a ‘come & sing’ chorus of almost 100 singers from across the region, with Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral’s James Luxton conducting. The brilliantly talented Wigan Youth Brass Band delivered a stirring second half to the concert.

On Sunday, Nigel Ogden of BBC Radio 2’s The Organist Entertains played to an appreciative crowd, while nearby the town council-organised Prescot Carnival attracted hundreds more visitors.

The programme continues throughout the week before a closing weekend that begins with a Barn Dance and Hot Pot Supper on Friday night. Saturday sees LJMU scholar Elspeth Graham speak about ‘Shakespeare and Prescot,’ and an evening concert featuring Songs from the Shows with BOST, one of the North West’s best musical theatre companies.

The 10-day festival draws to a close with Festival Choral Evensong on Sunday, followed by a Regal Festival Finale, with South Liverpool Orchestra paying homage to Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth II. The rousing occasion ends Proms-style, with such patriotic favourites as ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘Land of Hope and Glory.’

“We’re incredibly proud to be going so strong in our twelfth year,” said Artistic Director Dr Robert Howard.

“The quality of skill and talent on display only seems to increase year on year, and we’ve been overwhelmed by the success of this year’s festival so far.”

Full details of the programme are online at http://ift.tt/25sMoOB.

Paul Fenwick - Paintings (2010-2016)

Description

Venue: The Jam Factory

Date(s): Wednesday, 24 August 2016 to Sunday, 2 October 2016

Timing: 9am-10pm

Cost: FREE

Moving steadily away from traditional portraiture I have learned to allow the medium to entirely direct the process of the painting. The image organically emerges from the paint revealing a solid human presence. This kind of image is more accessible and open to subjective and personal interpretation by the viewer than traditional portraiture, and also seems to communicate on a deeper level.

I see absolutely no reason to begin work knowing exactly what is going to happen. I want to be surprised during the creative process and also long after the event. This can only be achieved by working quickly, intuitively and in the moment, avoiding reliable techniques and knowing when to move on to something else.

Paint is a material that can convey much more than just visual information, when understood and used with feeling. Like playing music, it is not just about playing the right notes in the right order. Painting without feeling becomes an exercise in pure technique and ultimately means nothing.

Description

Astrology for Artists workshop at Display Gallery

2nd and 3rd of July (Saturday & Sunday) from 11am - 5pm

Led by Argentine born artist Madeleine Botet Lacaze, Astrology for Artists invites artists to explore the links between Astrology and the ways in which we express, act, think, feel but – most importantly – the ways we search, get inspired and create work.

In advance of the workshop, Madeleine will read and draw up each participating artist’s Astrological Natal Chart, showing what the sky looked like at the exact moment of their birth. This will be the starting point for discussion, reflection, physical exercises and visualizations, exploringcreative processes from an unusual, highly personal perspective.

Madeleine’s practice focuses on the body’s relationship to identity, belonging and presence; creating intimate interdisciplinary performances that question our perception of corporality. Encounters with a diversity of cultures and spiritual practices throughout her life and practice – including astrologers and shamans – have been a strong influence on her ongoing artistic research.

Please email the following birth details to caroline@displaygallery.co.uk and madeleinebdl@gmail.com after you have purchased your ticket:
Day, Month, Year / City, Country / Exact time (from birth certificate)

Please note that you need to be able to come both days.

Exhibition Launch: Beverley Bennett, Dissonance, New Art Exchange

  • East Midlands
  • combined arts, dance, interdisciplinary arts, music, visual arts
  • New Art Exchange info@nae.org.uk

Description

Exhibition Launch: 1 July, 6pm - 9pm

Exhibition Runs: 2 July - 11 September

Beverley Bennett makes monochrome, abstract drawings where layers of pigment and repetitive mark making add a sense of power and energy to the surface of the paper. Her artworks have been described as having an almost audible quality which inspired Bennet to explore how her drawings can influence and transform into other mediums such as sound.

Here in Dissonance, Bennett has taken this idea a step further by collaborating with a number of Nottingham based artists across different art forms to explore how her drawings can be a catalyst for the creative process, beyond visual arts. Each artist/collaborator has been given the task of reconfiguring Bennett's drawings into a graphic score and/or interpreting the drawings into their medium of choice including dance, poetry and sculpture.

In addition, the audience is also invited to become part of the creative collaborative process by taking part in a spoken-word project that will be performed during the launch of the show, and in the gallery space itself, through interacting via dance and movement with a 3D sculptural piece in a form of a dance floor.

The artists collaborating with Beverley Bennett are: Antonio Abatangelo, Chiara Dellerba, Rob Flint, Jess Murray, David Stickman Higgins, Honey Williams.
