  • Kaiya Waerea kaiyawaerea0@gmail.com

Description

IN THE BASEMENT is an art event happening at the Star of Kings in, you guessed it, the basement. This will take place on the 30th of May, doors opening around 7pm. We are looking for artists working across a range of mediums, particularly installation, writing, and live artists. The basement has its own bar, a small stage, and sound system.

This event will be gold coin entry, the proceeds of which will go towards supporting the artists where possible. Unfortunately we can’t offer a fee for this event, which sucks, but we will do all we can to support sourcing materials and any other help you may need.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch and let us know a bit about yourself or for further info!

PRINT QUARTERLY PLATFORM SERIES:

Paul Coldwell in conversation with Christopher Le Brun

6-8pm, Wednesday 17 May 2017

Lecture Theatre, Chelsea College of Arts

16 John Islip Street

London SW1P 4JU

Christopher Le Brun is a painter, sculptor and printmaker, an alumnus of Chelsea College of Art and the current President of the Royal Academy of Arts.

This conversation will primarily focus on his work in print, the discipline for which he was originally elected to the Royal Academy. His work as a printmaker has been rich and varied, ranging in scale and process from large mural scale monotypes made with Garner and Richard Tullis in Santa Barbara, through to small scale intimate etchings published by Paragon Press with whom he has had a long association. Le Brun’s prints are generally the result of a dedicated period of engagement resulting in series and portfolios of work which explore themes and ideas current in his paintings and sculptures. Notable publications include Seven Lithographs 1989, 50 Etchings 1990, Four Riders 1993, Wagner 1994, Motif Light 1998, Paris Lithographs 2000, Fifty Etchings 2005 and the newly released Seria Ludo woodcuts in 2015.

Paul Coldwell is an artist and Professor in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts. He has written extensively on printmaking, is on the editorial board of the journal Print Quarterly and is a regular contributor to Art in Print for whom he writes regularly. He has curated a number of exhibitions including Morandi’s legacy: Influences on British Art (which included Le Brun) and more recently, The artists’ Folio as a site of Inquiry.

This event is organised by Chelsea College of Arts in partnership with Print Quarterly.

This is a call-out to emerging artists who wish to participate in a curated group exhibition as part of Leyden Gallery’s quarterly lease programme – ‘Platform for Emerging Arts’

Leyden Gallery are offering a unique opportunity to exhibit new work at an innovative and reputable London art gallery. This platform show is part of their ethos, which aims to promote emerging contemporary artists in relation to established and recognised names in the art world. This opportunity arises only once every quarter year when they open their gallery space to enable emergent and unrepresented artists to submit work to them for consideration in order to appear as part of their gallery lease programme, which is offered at exceptional value.

Following the successful realisation of their previous Platform Exhibitions, they are once again planning to open their gallery space to enable innovative and talented artists the chance to exhibit their work. This is an open call for work in all mediums.

This quarterly gallery programme for unrepresented artists offers the gallery an opportunity to encounter work by artists who may be suitable for future representation in non-leased curated shows.

Working in challenging closed settings without artistic inputs? / noh budget films / London / london

Description

A training course for Facilitators in dealing with Resistance

This highly practical hands-on course is particularly suited to facilitators and group leaders who want to acquaint themselves with the challenges involved in working with ‘hard’ groups within prisons, hospitals, probation centres, youth clubs, pupil referral units and holiday schemes. You will be able to experience, practise and learn a variety of techniques in managing and dealing with resistance and disengagement in challenging settings.

The facilitator has to perform radical and innovative functions. It’s different from a theatre director, drama teacher, youth leader, a shaman, cultural activist, therapist or a joker, yet it borrows aspects of these roles.

The facilitator needs to select the most appropriate games, exercises and techniques to bring out the best of the group, which means looking at the geographical, social and cultural context of the workshop session.

How does the facilitator deal with the challenges involved in working with ‘hard’ groups behind closed doors? What does a facilitator do? What are the nuts and bolts of facilitation?

Who is this for?

People who are in related professions such arts practitioners, social care, therapy, mental health, education, community arts or personal development as well as students and trainees in such professions.

Applications are also encouraged from social inclusion partners who are interested in understanding the role and value of arts-based practice to the groups they work with. It is also for Facilitators, artists, teachers, directors, workshop leaders and activists and anyone who works with difficult groups.

The training covers techniques with explanations, instructions and suggestions to help you develop your own style and approach. The techniques can be readily adapted to a wide range of difficult settings with adults and young people.

This will also be an opportunity for professional development, networking and skill sharing so as to enable continued high standards of good practice.

London UK Friday 12thMay 10.00am – 5.00pm

Cost £59.00

All Participants receive a free TRAINING MANUAL on completion.

***Applications for second cohort of post-graduate artists for alternative art programme TOMA closing 28 April***

Essex’s first alternative art MA, TOMA, is reaching the end of its open call in a bid to find its second cohort of artists with applications closing Friday 28 April. The alternative post-graduate art education programme launched last September with ten artists on the course and is looking for the next group to take part in the responsive course.

Based at Metal Art School the experimental course is a year-long programme that is shaped and directed by the participating TOMA artists. The programme is still open for applications from artists who already have at least five years strong practice and are interested in accessing alternative ways of learning.

*** The deadline for applications is 28 April 2017 ***

***Application form here: http://ift.tt/2phf8vf***

TOMA is a space for artists to work and develop their practice within a critical framework pitched at postgraduate level. It is unaccredited in the traditional sense, but provides a programme of learning that benefits the practice of artists in the same way.  Designed to fit the everyday lives of contemporary working artists it is responsive to its participants and works as an artist-led co-operative. Fluid and open in its evolution, participants directly steer the study programme, selecting and inviting those who come to teach on it and the topics explored.

Visiting artists from TOMA’s first year have so far included; Ackroyd & Harvey, Bruce McLean, Florence Peake, Hannah Leighton-Boyce, Michael Pawlyn and Richard Wentworth. The TOMA artists are also expecting visits from;Becky Beasley, Cornelia Parker, Griselda Pollock, Peter Watkins andSusan Stockwellover the remaining first year of the programme.

TOMA artists also choose their own tutors for the year, take part in self-selected practical workshops, stage exhibitions and public facing events, have regular crits and work collaboratively throughout their year on the programme.

All Is Well at the Shop Front Theatre & MAC / / West Midlands

All Is Well at the Shop Front Theatre & MAC

Description

A stunning evocation of the long term aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, All Is Well tells the story of Aleks, Stefan and Nina as they struggle to trust one another again while living with the fear of the invisible radiation.

On Radunitsa, the day of remembrance for the dead, the forest is once again filled with people as they return to visit their family graves. But Anna and Blackbird have other ideas to keep the day trippers and tourists away for good.

'aleks told me that you can smell fear… people sweat it out bit by bit and then other people smell the fear and they start to sweat… and so the fear spreads… person to person…'

All Is Well is at times poetic, funny and devastatingly fierce in its appraisal of the true cost of nuclear power.

About the company...

Written by Vanessa Oakes

Directed by Mark Evans

Designed by Nancy Surman

Puppetry by Joff Chafer

Suitable for ages 12+

What audiences think...

Beautiful and contemplative.

Telling especially for someone who has met someone who suffered from the disaster.

Counterpoint by Ivy Panesar and Phillipa Day: 4 – 28 May 2017

A collaboration between two artists previously unknown to each other, utilises contrast of colour to create contradictory and varied emotional reactions. There are notable discrepancies in their work and method which creates a magical disharmony.

Working in challenging closed settings without artistic inputs? / Noh Budget Films / London

Description

A training course for Facilitators Teachers and Group Leaders in dealing with Resistance

Art Exhibition by Panayiotis Marlagoutsos / LT Gallery, 1 Orchard Street, Weston-super-Mare BS23 1RG / South West

Description

Panayiotis was born in Argos, Greece in 1977. He studied at the Athens Schools of Fine Arts and is a member of the Hellenic Chamber of Fine Arts. He has had work in seven group exhibitions and has had five solo shows. More recently exhibiting locally to where he now lives in and around Crudwell. His work is open to interpretation by the viewer.

"I can remember myself with a pencil drawing on a piece of paper at a very early age. I love it because it is my ‘antidepressant’. You can tell tales of the most tragic or the most beautiful images using very modest commodities.

Contrary to common belief, the painter doesn’t know exactly what he sets out to do, nor does he know how to do it. He simply hopes that he can react correctly to the dilemmas that the art brings about. The anticipation of the correct reaction gives birth to passion for painting.

That’s what painting is to me- the pleasure and the acknowledgement that you are in fact just a child; a continuous pursuit and a harsh resistance to obligatory adulthood. It is the possibility to preserve one additional nature; that of being an adult but retaining the right to enjoy life, even when life is not so pleasurable, simply by ‘opening windows…’"

- Panyiotis Marlagoutsos

Due to the number of applications we receive, we strongly prefer to see footage either of the proposed work or other work by the same choreographer.

You will need to cover any costs involved such as travel, costumes and props. Each piece will receive a share of box office income but it is unlikely to be a substantial amount.

Our scratch nights provide artists with a friendly space in which to show their work, with facilitated Q&As, technical and marketing support and documentation.

Blue Cloud Scratch originated from Cloud Dance Festival’s open space event in January 2016 on gender and equality, and seeks to address the need for scratch nights and feedback sessions, while Blue Elephant Theatre seeks to explore ways to support independent artists.

"Camberwell’s friendly performing arts space, The Blue Elephant has teamed up with established dance platform, Cloud Dance Festival, to showcase brand new choreography and make dance more accessible at the same time…Blue Cloud Scratch has shown itself to be a very welcome addition to the Off-West End performing arts scene. A rewarding experience for those on, off- and backstage which hopefully will become a regular event."
