PROJECTIONS: David Bowie music videos and filmography

Description

Six-week evening course - Mondays 7-9pm, 10 July - 14 August 2017

In the new 6-week PROJECTIONS lecture series by Mary Wild, psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and Jacques Lacan will establish the interpretive framework to study David Bowie’s music videos and filmography, with a focus on his personas, experience of trauma, struggle with mental illness, addiction, isolation, and attainment of creative autonomy. Exploring the full range of Bowie’s legacy, we will begin with the game-changing and tumultuous early years, moving on to the radically unconventional Berlin period, later considering his status as a global chart-topper and originator of exciting aesthetic movements, finally culminating in the neo-classical era of a sophisticated artist always in the process of reinventing himself. Along the way, we will reflect on Bowie's legendary collaborations with iconic figures of the music and film industries (e.g., Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, Nicolas Roeg, David Lynch). This course is a celebration of a unique musical genius, our dearly departed glamorous alien, one so evolved that he confronted his terminal illness with unimaginable courage, turning his own death into a work of art.

Comedy Performance: Anchor Woman, Viv Groskop / Freud Museum London / London

Comedy Performance: Anchor Woman, Viv Groskop, Freud Museum London

Description

Following her five star, sold-out 2016 show Be More Margo, BBC Radio 4’s Viv Groskop presents her latest work-in-progress ahead of the Edinburgh Fringe. 'Anchorwoman' is a show exploring why exactly the news is so annoying at the moment. The veteran of a twenty-year career in journalism, Viv asks the questions that matter in this era of “alternative facts”. What should we make of ‘fake news’? Do social media updates now constitute reporting? And would the news be better if only Moira Stuart was allowed to read it out? Current affairs, politics, feminism and Fiona Bruce impressions ahoy!

Tickets include a complimentary G&T with all the trimmings (or soft drink). Doors open at 6.30pm.

Viv Groskop is a comedian, writer and broadcaster. A guest presenter on BBC Radio 4, she appears regularly on Front Row, Woman’s Hour and Saturday Review. Her one-woman shows 'Be More Margo (2016) and 'Say Sorry to the Lady' (2015) had five-star sold-out runs at The Stand at the Edinburgh Fringe (“Viv is brilliant” — Jo Brand). She’s the author of 'I Laughed, I Cried', a best-selling memoir about doing 100 stand-up shows in 100 consecutive nights (“frankly psychotic” — Mail on Sunday). She writes comment for the Guardian and the Observer and has a weekly column on culture in The New European.

Description

Reading by Patsy Prince of
The Old Woman From Friuli By By Ghillian Potts Illustrated by Ed Boxall

Stanmore Library, 8 Stanmore Hill, Stanmore, HA7 3BQ on 8th July 2017 2pm FREE

The Duke looks out from his castle, and everything he can see for miles and miles belongs to him. Everything, except one small strong house, with a small garden, two goats and a beehive. They belong to the old woman from Friuli. The Duke wants that house, but the old woman, she won’t sell. She’s from Friuli, where all the REALLY stubborn people come from.
A short folk tale for everyone from small children to old women, and probably even suitable for sulky dukes.

What is the difference between a Creative Producer and a 'normal' Producer?  Where do Artistic Directors fit in?  What about Finance, the law, choice of plays or musicals? Then there's employing actors, working with creatives, commissioning new works, copyright, contracts, fundraising, other events, investing in theatre, parties and pitfalls!

The workshop looks at everything needed to put on a show or event or start a production or theatre company, from the local pub, to a national tour, to the West End of London. It's for those already working in the industry and anyone who has ever felt a desire to create theatre or events and promote them.  The workshop looks at the pros and cons of commercial production, setting up a theatre company and local/national touring.  It will also be useful to anyone who has considered investing in theatre, or is just curious about what a Creative Producer does!

Previous participants at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and RADA have included students, amateur actors, producers, directors, theatre administrators, film producers, arts council officers and writers.

Sarah & James Arts invite you to submit work for a long anticipated exhibition set to take place October this year on Stoke Newington Church Street.

“A restless desire - to pirate the water, to pilfer the fre. Find it and keep it and make it your own whether it's blood or it is a bone. Possession obsession with passion for guilt, the moment they come, you'll see what you need. It's not an object, nor is it a thing; they tell you THE TRUTH and it's not what you think. Tey say that you don't own what you possess, the evidence's soaking in the juice of madness. An urge that is stronger than reason of mind, the mania is in you, it's making you blind. Fear mixed with pressure – the taste you admire make up the fuel for your restless desire.”

Debut Solo Art Show / Athena Anastasiou / London / Brick Lane

Description

Gallery: 5th Base Gallery

Date: Friday 14th & Saturday 15th of July 2017

Opening: Friday 14th – 6pm to 9pm

Address: 5th Base Gallery, 23 Heneage Street, London, E1 5LJ

5th Base Gallery are thrilled to be holding Athena Anastasiou’s debut solo show “Living Into Your Portrait” at their Brick Lane Gallery, from July 14th – July 15th, unveiling her collection of new paintings, limited edition prints and screening her Art Bio Film on the opening night.

Athena Anastasiou is an artist, photographer and founder of London’s Pop Up Art Collective Meet The Artists. M.T.A has represented over 100 emerging artists from London, across 5 events and recently collaborated with Creative Debuts in Shoreditch.

For this show, Athena was intrigued by how people can be oblivious to, or deny, their greatness; their capabilities, power and beauty. Living Into Your Portrait is about empowering people to see how exceptional they already really are, by showing them a mirror of themselves through paint.

Inspired by her family and close friend’s stories, Athena has created a series of portraits using thick expressive paint strokes and bold imagery. Her intention is to re-create her sitters through her vision of how she sees them, encouraging the sitter to see their true reflection from the painting. She invites them to live into that new reality and accept the path towards being who they already are.

“The concept is focused on building a strong connection with self by creating a portrait of a new, or existing, reality the sitter can live into; when you focus your attention on something for long enough, it beautifully becomes a reflection of who you really are”

- Athena

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Athena is a London artist based in Dalston. Her early roots are in music photography, with clients ranging from Abbey Road, The Roundhouse and Red Bull Studios. Now focusing on her art, she paints large scale vibrant portraits and other themes, while performing live art in various European cities.

Exhibition by Jack Hicks / LT Gallery / South West

Description

1 Orchard Street, Weston-super-Mare BS23 1RG

www.ltgallery.com             ltgallery@hotmail.com

Open Tues, Fri, Sat 10-4 and Thurs 12-7 (also by appointment)

Acrylic paintings by Weston-super-Mare artist Jack Hicks. Jack has a wealth of drawings made from life which he uses and continues to make, as a reference and physical/mental exercise for his paintings back in his studio at the Old Town Quarry. As well as direct visual observation, he responds to the sense of a place's past and the feeling of its present. Further decisions are made in how he composes and constructs his paintings so that they have their own, different presence but still embody the history of the process used to create them, which starts before any paint even reaches the canvas. When it does, the application varies considerably across the picture plane from thinned paint poured from above, to calligraphic brush marks, to areas blocked out and scraped flat with the edge of a palette knife. His most recent painting was done completely from memory and invention, and is a spring-board for the next.

A teacher of art, Jack went part-time a couple of years ago allowing him more time for his own artwork. He is very enthusiastic about the direction it is going in and this exhibition shows the recent development of his work at an exciting time in his career.

He has previously exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Institute of Contemporary Arts, Wells Art Contemporary, Bath Society of Artists, A2 Gallery (Wells), the Royal West of England Academy and Devizes Museum. Influences include Graham Sutherland and Paul Nash.

You can look through a few of his sketchbooks in the gallery and there are also some prints and cards available to buy at very reasonable prices for their quality. He has sold some of his recent paintings and continues to sell, so don't miss this opportunity to see those he still has; carefully curated in this exhibition which runs until Tuesday 4th July.

Collaborative Translation Workshop / Head for Heights Theatre Company Ltd / London

Description

Collaborative Translation Workshop with Head for Heights

Friday, 7 July 2.30pm-5.30pm

The Space, E14 (space.org.uk)

This is a workshop for actors, directors, translators and writers who are interested in innovative, collaborative approaches to translating text; those with a general interest in translation and/or Chilean theatre are also welcome. Head for Heights have pioneered a method of translation which puts the actor and director at the heart of the process, ensuring the translated text is dramatically vibrant and reflective of both its original and new cultural context.

Working with scenes from a classic of Chilean theatre,Los invasores/ The Invaders by Egon Wolff (1926 – 2016), we will explore how character and action contribute to the language of the production.  Participants will not only learn new approaches to translation, but will also be able to enhance their understanding of ‘actioning’ and physicalizing text. The workshop will be led by directors Sue Dunderdale and Cristobal Pizarro.

The cost of the workshop is £10 (free to members of the Space's Stargazer Scheme). For more information and to book, visit space.org.uk. Questions can also be directed hello@headforheights.org.uk

Readings of New Chilean Plays + Voices in Translation Panel / Head for Heights Theatre Company Ltd / London

Description

In conjunction with the UK premiere ofMad Man Sad Woman by Chilean playwright Juan Radrigán, there will be rehearsed readings of two new Chilean plays on 24 June. These will be of interest to anyone involved in theatre-in-translation, Latin America, and/or artistic directors/programmers looking for innovative new work. The schedule is:

15.30-16.30: Reading 1

Medusa, by Ximena Carrera, translated by Catherine Boyle, with Cristóbal Pizarro

Directed by Cristóbal Pizarro (Interdram, interdram.cl)

In Medusa three women, who have been captured and imprisoned as left-wing insurgents and broken under torture, live a weekend of crisis as their lives as informers for the Pinochet regime force them into personal and moral dilemmas with which they find it increasingly difficult to live.

 17.00-18.00: Reading 2

Super Heroes, by Alexis Moreno Muñoz, translated by Catherine Boyle and Alejandro Franco

Directed by Alejandro Franco (Founder and Director, Teatro Manifiesto)

Super Heroes tells the story of a group of alienated public servants who work in an office located in any city hall, in which violence, nostalgia, failure and friendship are the basis of an absurd life where the definition of what is evil and justice does not matter anymore. However, these public servants were once Super Heroes, and it’s time for them to be Super Heroes again.

In addition, on 29 June, there will be a post-show panel titled 'Voices in Translation', featuring representatives from Out of the Wings (outofthewings.org) and Legal Aliens (legalalienstheatre.com), talking about innovative approaches to translation, including collaborative approaches.

Artist collecting memories of Preston for new community maps / In Certain Places / North West

Description

Traces of Place is a project by artist Olivia Keith, who is mapping, preserving and sharing memories of north-west Preston, an area undergoing rapid change. Olivia is interested in how maps can keep elements of a place alive and ways that memories can be preserved and passed on, such as place names, stories, poems, songs and drawings.

From 26 June until 10 July, Olivia will be based at the Final Whistle Cafe in Preston, collecting memories from residents about the area. She will be collating residents’ contributions and asking people to add their memories to an online community map of the area, as well as creating her own maps based on what she discovers. The project will culminate in information and maps that will be distributed to new homes in the area. Olivia’s large-scale reportage drawings of the area will also be on display in the cafe.

Come and talk to Olivia at the Final Whistle Cafe at 10am–1pm on 27 June, 2, 4 and 9 July and 1pm–4pm on 29 June, 1, 6 and 8 July (and other times by arrangement). Free tea/coffee voucher for everyone who attends. For more information and to share your memories, email Olivia.

Traces of Place is part of The Connected City project by In Certain Places, a series of artworks and events exploring areas that will be affected by the City Deal – a scheme that aims to deliver new jobs and housing in Preston.

Join the conversation: On Tuesday 4 July at the Final Whistle Cafe, 6–8.00pm, we’ll be talking about what makes us feel at home in a new place. What helps us to put down roots and feel connected to the environment? What can established residents pass on to newer residents about community and place itself and how can this gift of information be shared? All are welcome to join us, to listen or to participate and refreshments will be provided. Book your free place now.

Quentin Blake: The Life of Birds / House of Illustration / London

Quentin Blake: The Life of Birds, House of Illustration

Description

"A rare chance to see a selection of original drawings by Blake and enjoy a tightly-focused exhibition dedicated to one of his most rewarding subjects" – Creative Review. Read article.

"Brilliantly quirky ornithology and a 'kindly but penetrating' commentary on the human condition” – The Telegraph

This exhibition, curated by Quentin Blake himself, is the first ever to examine a theme that has intrigued him throughout his career – birds.

“I have always liked drawing birds. I can't quite explain why but it may be because like us, they are on two legs and have expressive gestures. It's a way of commenting on the people we see around us without actually drawing individuals.”

It shows a series of original drawings from his personal archive of birds in everyday situations, revealing a kindly but penetrating commentary on the human condition. The subtleties of the birds’ interactions show Blake’s mastery of conveying emotion through expression and gesture, a hallmark of his illustrations.

The Quentin Blake Gallery at House of Illustration is the only place in the world to show a continuous but changing exhibition of Blake’s work, exploring his archive of over 35,000 drawings, most of which have never been publicly displayed. It offers a unique insight into the artistic practice of one of the world’s defining illustrators.

Until Sunday 1 October 2017, 10am - 6pm, last entry: 5.30pm

Jacqueline Ayer: Drawing on Thailand, House of Illustration

Description

An exhibition by the ground-breaking 1960s illustrator, designer and entrepreneur.

Jacqueline Ayer's picture books were a remarkable addition to 1960s America. Documenting her family’s life around the back lanes of Bangkok, they were the first books published in the US to depict Asian culture authentically. The Paper-Flower Tree and Nu Dang and his Kite will be reissued by Enchanted Lion Books to coincide with the exhibition, for the first time in almost 60 years.

Born in 1930s New York to Jamaican parents, Ayer grew up with Milton Glaser in the first interracial housing in the US. She illustrated for Vogue and worked alongside Andy Warhol before moving to Thailand in the 1950s.

Whilst there she also founded fashion company Design Thai, creating textiles and garments without colonial overtones – her reference book Oriental Fashion is still used by London College of Fashion today.
