Night life: drawing workshop with drag queen Tanya Hyde / Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft & Brighton Festival / South East

Night life: drawing workshop with drag queen Tanya Hyde, Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft & Brighton Festival

Description

12 May 7-9pm University of Brighton, Grand Parade Gallery

Some of the wildest and most entertaining people come out at night! This series of life classes will be a mixture of the models performing for you while you draw.

Drag queen, futurologist and cutting edge cultural commentator, Tanya Hyde, will present a searing indictment of the dark empty void that lies at the rotting heart of post-Trumpian, pre-Brexit consumer capitalism through the medium of interpretative dance. Or maybe she’ll just fling herself around a bit in a sparkly frock. Anyway, she’ll be looking fabulous and that’s all that really matters.

The workshops will take place in Cathie Pilkington's RA The Life Rooms installation - a ghost space of the Royal Academy's Life Room. So you will be creating works of art within a work of art.

  • Jack Fortescue jack@acme.org.uk

Description

From October 2017, Acme will offer an Artist Housing Programme starting up to 22 residential artist studios to be offered on five-year fixed rent secure tenancies to UK based fine artists. The single rent for both a studio and a home and secure term aims to provide artists with greater financial security and predictability, allowing them to plan and concentrate on developing their practice.

Applications are now open for six residential artist studios at our Glassyard studio building in Stockwell, SW9. Unlike a standard flat, the units have been specifically designed as artist studio spaces, with the living component a secondary feature. They are offered on a fixed monthly rent of £825 for five years.

For more information and details of how to apply, visit - http://ift.tt/2nIp69O

The deadline for applications is 12 noon, Friday 12 May, 2017.

Acme has provided artists with living accommodation since it was founded as an Artists Housing Association 45 years ago. In the 1970s Acme was London’s largest provider of short-life artist housing with over 300 properties made available to artists across London to use as homes and studios. Acme is now the UK’s largest provider of secure, long-term artists’ studios and offers a substantial residencies and awards programme, without relying on regular public funding. Acme continues to work with local authorities, commercial developers and housing associations to find new ways to create genuinely affordable spaces for artists to work and live.

Description

The Muse Gallery proudly presents

META-

Alisha Mir

06.04-23.04.2017

Private View: 06.04.2017, 6.30-9.00pm

Alisha Mir creates an environment where the uncanny is the reality of that world ‘inside’ the drawings and the surfaces they lay upon. Interstitial hybrids are real here and the work is a freeze frame of a dream-like trance or state that appears almost ghost like, ephemeral. Mir’s work consists of acid etchings on steel; she has been interested in the ‘fantastic’ relating to the uncanny...which to her is an oscillation between what I there and what is created, she find the in-between state quite curious, the world of human- animal hybrids play an important part in her work.
The way in which Mir has used steel, as the viewer you will be presented with the work face to face and will see an illustration straight away but not all at once as the wall sculptures demand that you move along or step back in order to fathom it. She deliberately tampers with the surface - there is interference when viewing the work that relies on the light or lack thereof, this gives a lenticular holographic illusion to the work.

Description

Free public symposium, Friday, 12th May 2017

Times: 10.30-17.15 followed by a reception for the exhibition.

Location: Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge Campus, East Road, Cambridge CB1 1PT

To accompany the exhibition by Annie Cattrell RSA FRBS in the Ruskin Gallery, 21stApril to 19th May 2017.  Convened and chaired by Dr Marius Kwint, Reader in Visual Culture, University of Portsmouth.

Universities seek to transform lives and societies through education and research. Annie Cattrell’s proposed forthcoming kinetic public artwork on the exterior of Anglia Ruskin University’s new Science Centre will celebrate this ideal by its ever-changing appearance. But what does transformation mean in practice? How can it occur physically, socially and mentally? How have such processes of metamorphosis and flux been experienced, understood and represented? In this interdisciplinary symposium, leading researchers trace the theme of transformation through art, architecture, history, psychology and physics in engaging ways. This event is aimed at general, learning-oriented audiences, but will also be of interest to experienced scholars in the humanities, social sciences and the interaction of science and art.

For full details and a list of speakers at the event please visit: http://ift.tt/2ndIzeT

The event is free, however spaces are limited and therefore booking is required.

Description

As the city celebrates its fiftieth anniversary, Digitalis, a new season of digital adventures in Milton Keynes Central Library, is set to re-imagine the city through a series of innovative art experiences from March to September this year.

Through a programme of city explorations, exhibitions, interactive experiments, the latest creative technology, workshops and talks for all, experience the Central Library and city through new eyes to discover and investigate how we see the world, understand our place in the universe at this moment, and how we can shape the future now.

The season started with the UK premiere of artist Andy Gracie’s digital installationDeep Data Prototype_3, which is situated in the Central Library until September. Andy's work replicates the conditions for life on other planets using live data from NASA's deep space probes. His work asks us to consider whether we will ever discover life on other planets and whether these planets might ever be colonised by humans.Deep Data Prototype_3presents a live experiment to evolve life that could survive on distant alien worlds.

Andy will be in residence in the Central Library throughout Spring and Summer 2017 to create a newly commissioned piece to be launched in August.

The season will see cutting-edge artists using the Library as a base, including Mythogeographer Phil Smith, whose urban explorations, will investigate the possibilities and development of mythologies and legends in such a young city with the help of the general public.

A series of workshops during the Spring bank holiday, July and August will invite all ages to explore and get curious, re-imagining Milton Keynes by exploring past, present and envisioning its future.  Become an architect, working with artists to contribute your own stories and ideas of a vision for the future through the latest technology.

Description

This year I will be offering another series of free evening conversations in the spring followed by workshops. I am looking forward to this special opportunity once again to meet with you all to share in conversation on a topic that is close to our hearts.

What do you really want? what does empowered from within mean for you? what are the obstacles which stops you being true to yourself ?  These are some of the questions I am interested in dialoguing with you about. I will attempt to meet you right where you are.

Life is our ultimate teacher, and our bodies are our most valuable asset which carries our sense of being. Within each individual is the ability to shape their own life. Our creativity is our deepest level, it allows us the freedom to say the unsayable and connect to our authentic self. The aim of the conversation is for you to leave the room with lots of information, but also be motivated and enthusiastic to gain the tools to rehearse for change.

This will be a small, friendly interactive group of like-minded individuals in a non-judgemental and interactive space open to all.

Join us for tools and strategies to tackle the tough stuff of self-empowerment and making an investment in you.

CONCRETE+CLAY / Beacon Bureau / London / East Midlands

  • London, East Midlands
  • crafts, film, visual arts
  • John Plowman beaconbureau@gmail.com

Description

CONCRETE+CLAY is a curatorial collaboration between Roaming Room and Beacon Bureau. Their respective locations Roaming Room (urban) and Beacon Bureau (rural) find commonality in the fact that, as raw materials, CONCRETE+CLAY are both extracted from the ground upon which we walk, live and build. This affinity makes these two materials suitable but unlikely bedfellows. Their plasticity comes to mind; their stability reliant on fire and water; fire rendering clay into a more permanent state whilst water (the antidote to fire) binds together the constituents of concrete giving it its strength. CONCRETE+CLAY, extracted from the ground and destined to return if not now but some time in the indeterminable future. Waiting to be unearthed by archaeologists and geologists who will pass judgment on our current geological epoch, the Anthroposcene.

CONCRETE+CLAY is an exhibition of sculpture, installation, drawing and film creating tangential connections between concrete and clay, geography and archaeology, past and present, real and imagined. Taking you on a journey from extant WW2 pillboxes in rural locations through the experience of walking in the urban landscape to the demolition of high-rise tower blocks.

Proposed Exhibition dates 3 – 13 May 2017

This is a call-out to emerging artists who wish to participate in a curated group exhibition as part of Leyden Gallery’s quarterly lease programme – ‘Platform for Emerging Arts’

Leyden Gallery are offering a unique opportunity to exhibit new work at an innovative and reputable London art gallery. This platform show is part of their ethos, which aims to promote emerging contemporary artists in relation to established and recognised names in the art world. This opportunity arises only once every quarter year when they open their gallery space to enable emergent and unrepresented artists to submit work to them for consideration in order to appear as part of their gallery lease programme, which is offered at exceptional value.

Following the successful realisation of their previous Platform Exhibitions, they are once again planning to open their gallery space to enable innovative and talented artists the chance to exhibit their work. This is an open call for work in all mediums.

This quarterly gallery programme for unrepresented artists offers the gallery an opportunity to encounter work by artists who may be suitable for future representation in non-leased curated shows.

Part II: The Turning World | Landscape Exhibition / CHARLIE SMITH LONDON / London

Part II: The Turning World | Landscape Exhibition, CHARLIE SMITH LONDON

Description

Three British painters exploring the reality and fiction of landscape painting and the land itself. The second in a trilogy of exhibitions investigating the city, landscape and interiors.

Artists: Peter Ashton Jones, Sam Douglas, Barry Thompson.

Curated by Zavier Ellis.

CHARLIE SMITH LONDON presents the second in a trilogy of interconnected exhibitions.

'The Turning World' investigates the relevance of contemporary landscape painting in relation to the art historical, and our perception of it. Man's relationship with the land is dependent on geographical location and historical context. Circa 10,000 BC Homo sapiens transitioned from roaming bands of hunter gatherers to farming communities that settled in order to cultivate wheat. It is at this point that man began to fundamentally manipulate the landscape, and become reliant on a singular, fixed area. He learned to control the land, and the land came to control him.

In the Western art historical tradition, landscape painting evolved from being a background within which to set figures, into a subject in itself in the 16th century, specifically by artists such as Albrecht Altdorfer of the Danube School. By the 19th century landscape painting had become the dominant European genre, being significantly availed by the occurrence of Romanticism. Depictions of nature became the vehicle by which Romantic painters could express notions of awe, individuality, emotion, and the sublime.

It is in this context that we ask, what is a landscape?

The event will take place at CHARLIE SMITH LONDON, 336 Old Street, Shoreditch, London EC1V 9DR. Open from 11am-6pm Wednesday to Saturday. Please contact the gallery for further information on 020 7739 4055. Follow the gallery @CHARLIESMITHldn

Working with acrylics, aluminium, gemstones and Russian Standard Vodka, Anna McDermott’s stunning exhibition “Presence” offers up a collection of fragmented abstract landscapes to mesmerise and enthrall.

London-born Anna McDermott started her artistic career at the prestigious Central Saint Martins college of art.  After a thirty-year hiatus in creative activity Anna began painting again as a form of therapy and, in 2015, she made the decision to focus on developing her artistic style and character – a break which led to an epiphany.  Producing fragmented abstract landscapes on aluminium, Anna paints using a unique combination of acrylic paints and Russian Standard vodka.

Her first show for some years, Presence will be exhibited at Artizan in April 2017, as a part of our 2017 Solo Series.

The exhibition will run from 1st – 29th April with a ‘Meet the Artist’ private viewing on 1st April.

About the Work

I developed this technique in order to have as much artistic freedom as possible.  It might seem odd to be using vodka, but it’s only another form of spirit.  My eureka! Moment came a few years ago, after experimenting with surgical spirit in an unventilated room, which became unbearably uncomfortable.  I took refuge in a pub garden and saw a spill of vodka reacting with a patch of oil on the ground, creating exactly the kind of beautiful image I wanted.

Making art allows me to deal with a lifetime of trauma.  I find that in life you either focus on the negative and let it drag you down, or you do something with it – and I’m doing something with it.
