FACES + PLACES
A collaboration in two…
Two weeks
Two artists
1 collaboration
This March, Gallery Lock In will play host to a dynamic collaboration in both form and function. Long- time collaborators Stevie Unknown and Kit Ellery will work divided in the space, producing work for the other to take on in the second week of the exhibition. During this time they will showcase existing pieces and present their most recent project: ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’.
Having inherited a large collection of black and white family photographs, dating back to the early 1900s, Stevie Unknown and Kit Ellery have set about appropriating the nameless faces to invigorate them with a relevance and present account that renews their identity and attention. Although challenging to imagine the destruction of a family image, when re-presented in this way, items that could have easily slipped away are once again immortalised.
Separately, the work of these two artists is divergent. While Ellery paints serene houses upon hilltops, transporting her viewers into mystical other worlds, Unknown in direct contrast, dashes maniacal faces onto reclaimed material, drawing your mind back to the real but with a disturbing smile to remind us that everything is prime for alteration.
Placed together, Unknown’s faces and Ellery’s places will animate the space and audiences will be invited to watch the collaboration unfold at its halfway point and upon completion. Transformation through collaboration will be at the centre of these residency exhibitions as their work will complement and counteract simultaneously.
