Request for Information - Website Redesign

Description

The Old Vic is now at a pivotal moment in its almost 200-year life. Whilst it is important to celebrate the theatre’s past, it is now crucial for the organisation to look to the future and ensure it remains a vital part of the UK’s theatre ecology. As social, political, technological and cultural communities continue to transform, it is the responsibility of creative institutions to reflect these changes in order to sustain their relevance within society.

The Old Vic is about to implement an Audience Development Strategy that will inform and develop the way we communicate with existing and potential audiences. Alongside a new brand, pricing review and audience segmentation project, a new website will form a key part of enabling our strategic ambitions to become a reality.

The Old Vic is now accepting RFI submissions with a deadline of Monday 12 September 2016. If selected, you will be issued with a full brief, following which you will also be invited to come in and meet with The Old Vic informally to gain a further insight into the project. The aim is for the new website to be launched by Monday 27 March 2017.

Please visit The Old Vic's website to download the RFI document.

Modelling, mouldmaking and casting course

Modelling, mouldmaking and casting course

  • London
  • crafts, combined arts, interdisciplinary arts, theatre, visual arts
  • David Neat davneat@aol.com

Description

A 5-day practical course designed for sculptors, model-makers, prop/puppet-makers or anyone wishing to model and reproduce small forms. It can cater both for beginners with little prior experience or those with specific professional aims. Led by David Neat in his studio in Deptford, London SE8

Next courses: 3-7 October 2016, 31 October - 4 November 2016

Participants are asked to bring some small objects for casting with them, fully 3D (for 2-part mouldmaking) and also simpler one-sided forms. Independent projects may also be accommodated after discussion in advance if they involve the same, or similar, scheduled materials and processes ..i.e. it may be difficult to give them that much separate attention.

We begin by preparing the 3D objects for mouldmaking, culminating in making hollow and solid castings in resin or casting plaster as applicable. During this time we also look at various methods of modelling using a soft clay, including the use of armatures, formers and texturing tools. Participants are guided through modelling an additional relief form in polymer clay.

The second day includes methods of shaping rigid foams (such as styrofoam and polyurethanes) to achieve a variety of shapes. Then the course turns to the different means of making moulds and casting in different materials; including silicones, vinyl, plaster, latex, polyurethane and polyester resins, Sculpey, Polymorph and a range of colourants and fillers . Both simple 1-part and 3D 2-part mouldmaking are covered. We will also be considering alginate, metallic 'cold casting' and absorption casting using latex, clay slip or papier maché. Finally attention is given to methods of painting or patination.

The course is full-time, Monday to Friday, starting at 10.30 and finishing at 5.30 each day. The cost per person is £400 and all practical materials (and a full instructional CD) are included.

David is a sculptor and specialist tutor/lecturer, author of ‘Model-making: Materials and Methods’ 2008, and the popular ‘making’ blog at http://ift.tt/1iMzSjI

Say What?

‘The relationship is thus in the accusative’*

This is potentially a ‘thing’. A prototype, testing a dialogue with itself. Focused on form and intent, it becomes a denial of continuity and the expected ‘final’. The sensual pursuit of a transitive and undefined action, whose aims are obscured by both grammar and syntax. They affect and follow us as direct complements, finishing our sentences and taking up all the space in our uncompliant and overcrowded vocabularies. They are objects filled with ‘what for’,** substitute materials with properties that only simulate the intended outcome, an amalgamation of shapes and morphology embellished with all the root words, affixes, intonations and stresses. Loops of pre-existing knowledge and thingstuff,*** circles of doom and semantics whose sole purpose is [to] object
to rant make a stink
rave to take on
to/spurn go one-on-one
squawk to to to to to to
to mix it ip sound off
tangle

* ‘The Object is Poetics’ by Francis Ponge.
** ‘What for’ is typically preceded by threatening gestures and followed by pain.
*** Used mostly in sentences containing possessive nouns, where an entity would have an intangible object whose intentions need to be explained, or in situations where several words would be needed to describe the object but where the speaker does not feel compelled enough or immediately able to finish the description.

‘Say What?’ brings together artists Kit Craig, Rowena Harris, Russell Hill, Alex Lawler, James Prevett, Fay Nicholson, Emily Rosamund, Lisa Selby and Madalina Zaharia in an attempt to scrutinize and question the elaborate relationship between materiality and language, as well as the narrative and syntactical potential of the ‘thing’.

‘You must answer in the form of a question!’ is an afternoon of performances and hazardous dialogue involving a selection of the artists and curators around the ‘Say what?’ exhibition at ASC Gallery, London. The event will take the shape of a shifting and informal sequence of incidents, exploring the premises of the exhibition.

Workshop: Watch Me Watch You - These Things When We Are Together

Workshop: Watch Me Watch You - These Things When We Are Together

  • London
  • combined arts, dance, interdisciplinary arts, theatre, visual arts
  • macpherson.hamish@gmail.com

Description

Roehampton University
3, 4 September 2016 1-5pm
£20 one day £35 both days*

What are different ways of looking, and what are ways of looking/allowing the gaze that invite or deflect intimacy? How do we see our audiences and how do we invite others into our performance?

In this workshop we'll work with watching each other and with proximity, towards a potentially greater intimacy, troubling the idea that closer is more intimate and finding ways of being close without letting others in. We will work with finding ways of inviting the gaze we want.

We’ll also work with hard care: caring as listening, witnessing, responding, assisting, consenting, controlling, dominating, second-guessing, and submitting. Caring as a relational and aesthetic practice; as a negotiation of constantly fluctuating needs, capacities and interests. Care as a duty, as a virtue, a fake position, a Faith No More lyric, a chore, a punishment, a method of exclusion.

In this two day workshop led by Hamish MacPherson (UK) and Rachael Dichter (US) we'll engage exercises that explore sensing, intimacy, care and power dynamics working in duos as well as group structures to examine ways of watching, caring, challenging and being in proximity that lead us into a deeper understanding and control over the intimacy we invite with each other as performers and intimacy with we engage, invite and relish with the audience.

We’ll be moving, talking, touching but you don’t need to have a movement or performance background to take part. The workshop is designed to be relevant to both professional dance and performance artists and those with an interest in these issues. Please let us know if you have any access or any other needs you would like us to be aware of.

Email macpherson.hamish@gmail.com to book a place. Also get in touch if the price is prohibitive; we are not in receipt of funding but want to make the event accessible as possible.

Introduction to Linocut

Description

Suitable for beginners, this course is split over two Wednesdays, 14 and 21 Septmber, and will explore relief printing onto paper with lino. Relief printing is a process where the surface of the block (a sheet of lino or wood for example) is cut away and only what remains of the original surface will print. Tutor Susan Yeates will demonstrate how to prepare an image before cutting the block, applying ink and, most importantly, making prints. You will be taught to print using both hand burnishing and a printing press, allowing you to continue exploring the possibilities of relief printmaking from home or in the studio after the course. BOOKBINDING WORKSHOP

First London Run for ACE-Funded New Play By Rose Collis

Description

After four sell-out previews in Brighton, Arundel and Hove earlier this year, East Sussex writer and performer Rose Collis is taking her new one-woman play Wanting the Moonto the award-winning London venue Bread & Roses for six performances in September.
The Arts Council-funded play focuses on the remarkable life and career of Clemence Dane, eminent author, artist, playwright, journalist and Oscar-winning screenwriter.
Asked by her great friend Noel Coward to revive her acting career and play the famous role he once created for her: the eccentric medium ‘Madame Arcati’ in Blithe Spirit, she observes, ‘I have enough ghosts around me nowadays without playing someone who makes a living from conjuring them up…’
As she prepares to answer him, she reflects on their long personal and professional relationship − as well as memorable episodes from her chequered career, including penning the controversial early 20th century lesbian novel Regiment of Women, her war experiences, and her adventures in Hollywood with Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich… and The Marx Brothers. And, as she ‘summons up’ these ghosts from her past, she contemplates her own imminent future in the other world: ‘Perhaps I’ll come back and haunt you all. But I promise not to do it when Madame Arcati is summoning up the spirits.’

Wanting the Moon written and performed by Rose Collis, directed by Keith Drinkel.
September 18-20, 22-24 (no performance Sep 21), 7.30pm
Bread & Roses Theatre, 68 Clapham Manor, St, London SW4 6DZ. Nearest Tube: Clapham North. Tickets £10/£8. Bookable at: http://ift.tt/2bYsgPf

Artist Talk: Katia Kameli, The Mosaic Rooms

  • London
  • combined arts, film, interdisciplinary arts
  • rsvp@mosaicrooms.org

Description

8/10/16 12:00 pm

Join Katia Kameli in discussion with independent lecturer, curator, and art critic Simon Njami about the work in her first London solo show at The Mosaic Rooms and her wider practise.

Drawing together both new and recent work, Katia Kameli’s exhibition takes the audience on a journey exploring the power of storytelling, historical authenticity and national identity. The films and installation presented at The Mosaic Rooms showcase some of the artist’s central concerns: issues of dual identity, multiplicity, and the potential for residing in an ‘in-between’ space. The exhibition is staged at a time when such questions of selfhood, history and nation are particularly resonant.

Katia Kameli is a French-Algerian artist, born in 1973 in France. Through video, photograph, installation and print, she investigates intercultural spaces, intersecting identities and their construction. Her work has gained recognition on the international artistic and cinematographic scene.

Her most recent solo-exhibitions include: Futur, Artconnexion, Lille (2016); Taymour Grahne Gallery, New York (2014); 7 Acts of Love in 7 Days of Boredom, Transpalette, Bourges (2012); Duty Free, Videochroniques, Marseille (2012). She participated in numerous groups shows that include: Made in Algeria, MuCEM, Marseille (2016); Mare Nostrum, Prospectif Cine?ma, Centre Pompidou, Paris (2015); Entry prohibited to foreigners, Havre Magasinet, Boden, Sweden (2015); Where we’re at, Bozar, Bruxelles (2014); Lubumbashi Biennale, Congo (2013); Pour un Monde Durable, Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisboa (2013); Le Pont, Museum of Contemporary Art, Marseille (2013); Dak’art, Dakar Biennale (2012); Higher Atlas, Marrakech Biennale (2012); Bamako Biennale, Mali (2011).

  • Calling female players & noise makers - Gals with Guitars galswithguitars@gmail.com

Description

Calling female players, noise makers with electric guitars / hand held electronics and micro amps.
Gals with Guitars (Feel the Noise) is a new participatory composition by Sharon Gal, for a group of female players, using electric guitars, hand-held electronics, and micro amps.

The piece applies collaborative music making and highlights the relationship between sound and space by exploring and responding to the characteristics of the performance environment, its architecture and acoustics.
The composition is immersive and dynamic; the players move around the space, affecting its ambience, projecting their sound and combining it with others, shaping and sculpting the material, bringing about the group’s unique resonance and the emergence of a new sound.

Gal's with Guitars will be developed and performed to camera on the 26th of August as part of V22’s Summer Club.

You will need a battery powered micro amp (one that you attach to a belt, to carry with you while playing) a guitar with a strap (or hand held electronics) and spare batteries for your amp. The performance will be filmed, and made public with credit to all the performers.

Cultural Consumption among Latin-Americans in London

Description

Cultural Consumption and the Performing Arts among Latin Americans in London is a research project that outlines the nature of cultural consumption among Latin American migrants in London with a particular emphasis on performing arts. We will present the results from a survey of 444 Latin Americans in London, as well as the findings from a focus group of Latin American artists and in-depth interviews with key informants on their attitudes towards London’s cultural scene.

Based on a successful collaboration between CASA Latin American Theatre Festival and Queen Mary University of London’s Centre for the Study of Migration (CSM), Cultural Consumption and the Performing Arts among Latin Americans in London aims to become a point of reference for data on how migrants from both the Latin American community and the wider migrant community consume culture and most specifically the performing arts in the UK and a valuable resource for future improvements in cultural policy.

The launch, taking place on the 8th of September, will include presentations of the report, breakout group discussions and the screening of a short film documenting this research process. There will be drinks and snacks.

If you are interest in attending the event, please contact jacquie@casafestival.org.uk

Intersection - The Crossover Place Where Two Meet

Intersection - The Crossover Place Where Two Meet, Gabriel Fine Arts

  • West Midlands, London, Canary Wharf
  • crafts, combined arts, interdisciplinary arts, visual arts
  • Maria info@gabrielfineart.co.uk

Description

Gabriel Fine Arts are happy to announce the grand opening of their new East London Gallery space.

For those who do not already know us Gabriel Fine Arts is a London based gallery and artist community promoting internationalism and diversity both with our artists and the work that they create.

We have always been London-centric as the city reflects our multicultural values. We've recently exhibited all over; Notting Hill, Greenwich, Battersea, Old Street and frequently at our previous space in Waterloo. However we are once again putting down our roots, and this time our epicenter will be in Canary Wharf. Here we hope to bring more art and colour to the City of London itself.

Based only a 10 minute walk from Canary Wharf station the new gallery space is situated on the Isle of Dogs, surrounded by the rich culture and history of London's infamous Docklands. This area has historically always been culturally fluctuating, as it's imminence to the docks and the shipping trade meant that it had constant waves of new people coming and going. The area acted as the gateway to London for people coming from afar and was the point of welcome for them. We're hoping to renew this gateway by maintaining the stream of new art and culture through the Docklands and into London.

The opening exhibition, INTERSECTION (9th September-1st October) represents this new milestone and the start of new things. An intersection can be seen as a meeting of different directions. The cross-over place where two meet. This new exhibition evokes our very ideals by creating a space for artists and artwork to cross paths and be momentarily united.

Exhibiting Artists:

Max Baccanello, Dorota Bardyszewska, Isabelle Beaubien, Sholto Blissett, Kelly Carter, Saffron Harper Gow, Brad Kenny, Arkadiusz Kulesza, Shavkat Muratov, Mary Anne Nguyen, Peter Eugene Nilsson, Anastasia Olarou, Fiona Rennie Schwieters, Chris Rivers, Kingsley Thompson, Robert Wilkinson

24 hours choreolab and performance opportunity with Masha Gurina

Description

24 hours is a  Brighton Dance Network initiative providing an opportunity for dancers to work with choreographers over a longer period. Together they will research and develop a proposed idea and work toward a public sharing at the end of that period.

Masha is a Ukraine-born, London-based dance artist - choreographer, performer teacher and a graduate of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Dance & Music. She teaches contemporary dance, creative movement, partner work and Argentine tango internationally. Masha’s portfolio includes contemporary dance, physical theatre, dance film, art installations - her work has been selected by international dance festivals (USA, Italy, Czech Republic, Greece) and has received awards. Her recent works include her own production 'In Memoriam', 'Women of Troy' (New Venture Theatre Brighton),'Still Lives' (Brighton Little Theatre) and 'In Search of Gogol' (New Pechersk Drama in Kiev, Ukraine). Her recent performance credits include London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, Lord’s Mayor Festival, Cloud Dance Festival and various dance theatre productions and performance events in London and elsewhere in Europe.

During these weeks, we will be working on exploring new opportunities of partner work, taking inspiration from Argentine tango and some of its fundamental concepts (invitation to dance, leading and following, shifting through space, combining linear and circular movement, etc.). By doing this, my aim is to investigate a broader notion of 'connection' - and multiple ways to find it, develop it and perhaps lose it. We will work towards developing a piece loosely based on the subject of human encounters - things coming and going as people cross paths, develop fleeting or lasting relationships, and shift through life - alone, in pairs, or groups, at various speeds and different ideas of where they are going.

The lab takes place for 4 consecutive Fridays from the 23rd of September and then a further 4 from the 28th of October.

Performance date TBC, likely to be the 26th November.
