Description
Creating dramatic stories
'I find that most people know what a story is until they sit down to write one.' Flannery O'Connor
Central London, Thursdays 6.30-8.30pm, starts 15 Sept.
Your skeleton is invisible, but without it you’d have no form or function. Similarly, all good stories have hidden structures that are fundamental to their success.
This class is about learning specific tools and ways of thinking about story, and then using these tools simply and rigorously to develop your own original story from first idea to a working outline.
The course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn how to craft compelling, dramatic or comic stories – fiction and non-fiction writers, storytellers, playwrights, theatre-makers and screenwriters.
The first block of five weeks will cover the fundamental principles of creating stories through tuition, discussion, exercises and examples from film, theatre and fiction; the second five weeks will be focussed on helping each person develop and refine their own story through exercises, coaching and additional teaching. To get the most from the course, it’s recommended you do both blocks, however, the second block is optional.
The course is led by Jonathan Young, a scriptwriter, dramaturg and theatre-maker who has crafted original stories for 20+ years and has successfully taught Storylab to over 100 students at LISPA in London and Berlin over the past 3 years.
When? Thursdays 6.30pm-8.30pm, 15 Sept – 13 Oct (first block), then 3rd Nov – 1st Dec (second block).
Where? RADA Studios, 16 Chenies St, WC1E London (Tube: Tottenham Ct Rd or Goodge St)
Fee: £215 for all 10 weeks / £125 first block only
