Queer performance from Budapest

  • London, South East
  • combined arts, dance, interdisciplinary arts, music, theatre, visual arts, Other, Performance
  • avoecperformance@gmail.com

Description

AVOEC is coming to the UK, all the way from Budapest, to bring you the performance

::: RMQS - "Raising My Queer Self" and the workshop RADICAL SLOTH - Performance as self-care.

AVOEC is a Budapest-based company which creates work that disrupts binaries, embraces uncertainty and revels in quiet spectacles. Working between the realms of performance, theatre and live art, their work is concerned with the experimental edges of traditional art making.

RMQS is a versatile performance that combines text, movement, sound, presence and absence as it engages with issues surrounding being queer - particularly within the process of growing up in an environment that is not accepting of a non-hetero identity. It creates a queer feminist framework for addressing questions of (not) belonging, eroticism and gender.

RMQS will be performed in London as part of the BlackBox Festival on January 8th at 6.30 pm and January 9th at 8pm. In Brighton, the Marlborough Theatre will present RMQS on January 14th at 8pm.

Brighton will also receive the workshop RADICAL SLOTH - Performance as self-care on the 14th at 3pm.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I have many things I’d like to say to you / but I don’t know where to begin.

Do I start with you / me / them?

Do I start at the beginning / middle / end?

RMQS is what wasn’t, what couldn’t have been.

RMQS is self-exposure and vulnerability.

RMQS is the space in between.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

RMQS was made with support from the Workshop Foundation (Műhely Alapítvány) and SÍN Kulturális Központ.

Description

Mondays 6:30-9:30PM / 9 January - 6 February 2017

Tutor: James Kemp

Price: £245

Venue: Haverstock School

For more information here

Effort Productions offers 5-week Courses in the work of Yat Malmgren: Character Analysis/Movement Psychology with James Kemp, renowned acting teacher, whose many successful students include: Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy, Emilia Clarke, Gwendoline Christie, Howard Charles, and many others.

If you’re an actor looking for new ways to work on character, Character Analysis/Movement Psychology will give you the tools to do so.  In this course you will be introduced to the theory and practice of Yat Malmgren’s work, which breaks down all expressive movements into their constituent parts and links them to the deep seated psychological impulses which underpin them. From these building blocks, ‘character’ can be constructed, either from scratch as a creative act, or from a close analysis of an already existing script as an act of accurate and imaginative interpretation.

The training is based upon the work of two pioneers of 20th Century performance research: Rudolf Laban and Yat Malmgren.  Rudolf Laban, regarded as the architect of European Contemporary Dance, codified a system of analyzing and classifying movement in all its aspects, not only physical, but also in its expressive manifestations and psychological impulses.  Yat Malmgren extended these ideas to create a psychological typology which brings together Laban and Stanislavski.

This programme is aimed at participants new to this work, but not new to Acting.  This 5-week course serves as an introduction to the 'Yat Book', it entails an explanation of the core principles of the work and how they are applied to the actor's craft.   This programme's holistic nature lends itself to writers, directors, actors, and anyone interested in dramatic storytelling.

By the end of the classes you will be looking at the world through new eyes, being able to 'read' the movements of those around you for meaning, and to create physically expressive characterizations, which both excite the imagination and serve the writers intensions.

More about music in traditional African society

In Africa, music and life were intimately connected. It was difficult to separate daily life from artistic activities. Music accompanied all major life events and sometimes existed solely for entertainment purposes, but even then, always closely linked to the local history or mythology, and used to educate and inform the younger generations, and refresh the older generation’s memory.

African singing is the purest emotional and spiritual expression of music and it is believed to bring healing of the soul.

It is about coming together as a group, a family, a sorority, and finding the strength to carry on no matter what, or finding a rhythm to get the work done, or alleviating the pain of loss. It says: “You are not alone in this; we have outlived it or we will in the future, and we are holding your hand just as someone else has or will hold ours every step of the way”.

Political Poetry - a correspondence/online course

  • Throughout UK - online/correspondence course
  • literature
  • Helen Eastman livecanon@btinternet.com

Description

If you have plenty to say about 2016 (!) you might want to think about channeling that into your poetry and joining Live Canon's political poetry correspondence course which commences on January 11th. We ran the course in 2016 and hugely enjoyed the dialogue with an extraordinary group of poets, so we are going to run it again in 2017.
It's a 12 week course. Each week you receive a tutorial via email (illustrated with videos and audio recordings). There are writing prompts and exercises to inspire work, an online chat group for discussion, and written feedback from the Live canon team. In terms of looking back at the history of political poetry, we cover a wide range of poetry and poets, but rather than working chronologically, we cluster the tutorials around topics.

  • Topics covered include:
  • What is political poetry?
  • Politics and form
  • Protest poetry
  • Discourse, rhetoric and vocabulary
  • Poet as witness
  • Writing Back
  • Satire
  • Public Poetry
  • Old Stories, New Contexts
  • Rebels and Rule breakers
  • Audiences and communities

We studey political poetry's past, and aim to create its future.
As well as receiving the weekly tutorial, we create an online chat group for all the poets to discuss the work, questions and offer peer feedback.
The cost is £150. It can be broken into three installments if you wish (one to book, one when we start, one half way through). There is a 50% discount for students. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to come back to us.

Last year the International Postcard Show saw record submissions. “500 funny, pretty, political, surreal and rude examples of postcard-sized artworks’’ noted the Nottingham Post of last year’s show. ‘’The 'international' tag attached to the exhibition is deserved, entries have come in from as far afield as Dubai, the USA, Canada and Hong Kong.’’ 2017 looks set to be our largest Postcard Show to date with submissions coming in from far and wide.

All artwork is priced at £15, so this is a fantastic opportunity for visitors and aspiring art collectors to snap up an original work of art at an affordable price.

All participating artists will have the opportunity to exchange their postcard with another artist selected at random at the end of the exhibition. We hope that this exchange will help foster new connections and encourage communication among artists from diverse backgrounds and from different parts of the world.

Deadline for submissions: 6pm, Friday 6th January 2017

During the exhibition, Paul Henegan and Chiara Dellerba will be delivering a print-making workshop, where participants will be able to make their own postcard. The workshop will take place on Saturday 21st January, and will cost £17.50 including materials. On Saturday 28th January, Maggie Smith will be running a textiles workshop from 11am-2pm where you can learn how to use natural dyes on fabrics. The workshop will cost £30, materials are included.

Craven dialect brought back to life

  • Yorkshire, Skipton
  • combined arts, interdisciplinary arts, libraries, literature, museums
  • Charles Tyrer admin@settlestories.org.uk

Description

Arts and Heritage charity Settle Stories has been awarded £49,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. This investment will enable an exciting project, Tom Twisleton 100, to run throughout 2017.The project will focus on the history and stories of Craven dialect poet, farmer and Temperance advocate Tom Twisleton in the centenary year of his death.

The project in collaboration with the Museum of North Craven Life will be led by young people across Craven. With direction from Settle Stories these young people will look at the stories contained in his poems and explore social issues of both local and national significance from the time of Tom Twisleton between 1845 - 1917. These poems were written in Craven dialect over one hundred years ago. This dialect is now dying out with only around 150 speakers of the dialect, most of whom are very elderly.

The project will see Twisleton’s work brought back to life through multiple mediums. These will include new recordings of his work, available as podcasts, a family publication that will include some of the original poems and stories, images and new poems in Craven dialect by young people.  The project will culminate in a celebration weekend in Settle.

Throughout the process, young people will gain new skills including curating exhibitions, oral history interviewing, documentary research event management and public speaking. Through Tom Twisleton 100 young people will have the chance to gain a nationally recognised qualification, the Arts Award accredited by London Trinity College.

Fiona Spiers, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund, Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “There’s a common misconception that young people aren’t interested in learning about the past, but in our experience, they are incredibly passionate and enthusiastic. We want young people to explore the heritage that matters to them, and share it with everyone.”

It exists to promote access to free education as a fundamental right and stands in opposition to the current system of higher education. The School operates without money, without a bank account, without financial obligation. Rather than paying fees, the School runs a labour exchange programme with guests including artists, writers and curators, trading time for time not only to challenge the financial exclusivity of higher education but to strengthen and extend its network.

Participation in SOTD is a one-year commitment, running from February surely 2017 to February 2018. SOTD participants function as both students and co-organisers of the School.

We seek participants who are willing to collectively self-organise and build on the pre-existing structure established by previous years.

Any artist or maker can apply to join SOTD, with the exception of those who already have an MA or equivalent qualification, who are not eligible. We’re looking for those with a broad range of experiences of the arts, including a variety of ways of working, making, thinking and being, and an active practice.

SOTD is currently based in London but greatly benefits from participants based outside the capital, and possibilities for hosting sessions outside London during the year are encouraged. SOTD cannot support visa applications and therefore does not accept applications from those who need a visa to study in the UK.

Entrepreneurship in Cultural Heritage Workshop

Description

Entrepreneurship in Cultural Heritage Workshop

2nd February 2017

The Old Ikon Gallery, Fazeley Studios, Birmingham, B5 5SE

More information:

http://ift.tt/2hPOSGU

Over recent years the heritage sector has been hit by cumulative cut-backs in public sector funding, reductions in visitor spend and increasing competition for visitors. At the same time, a multitude of new opportunities continue to emerge relating to technological innovation, new audiences and communication networks and new management approaches.

In the context of this developing landscape for the heritage sector, this workshop explores the increasing need for museums and heritage organisations to become ever more entrepreneurial in their approach in order to increase their resilience to the changing environment and also to identify ways and means to build profile, audiences, income and opportunities to communicate the heritage at their heart. Through presentations by speakers who, in different ways, are involved with innovative approaches  to the heritage and museums sector and through discussion, this workshop aims to identify some of the more entrepreneurial management practices of the heritage sector and to explore challenges and opportunities for future entrepreneurial actions.

Key Themes:

  • Working towards resilience
  • Partner working outside of the heritage sector
  • The role of the creative industries
  • Going global
  • Building audiences and income

Speakers include:

  • Professor Mike Robinson, Ironbridge Institute for Cultural Heritage
  • Professor Kiran Trehan, Professor of Leadership and Enterprise Development, University of Birminghan
  • Dr Chris Ferguson – Auckland Castle
  • Harvey Edgington – National Trust
  • Traci Dix-Williams – Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust
  • Colin Chester – The National Gallery Tony Trehy – Bury Art Museum
  • Elliot Goodger – Birmingham Museums Trust Enterprise Committee

Training opportunity: Hosts needed for kids film screenings

Training opportunity: Hosts needed for kids film screenings, Flatpack

Description

Do you have what it takes to help engage kids and their families more fully in cinema? Then this training opportunity may be for you!

'Build Your Own Compere' is a new opportunity offered by Flatpack: Assemble, a project that aims to create a more connected and visible film community in the West Midlands. We aim to increase the number of screenings tailored towards young viewers, and 'Build Your Own Compere' is the next step in achieving this.

These comperes will go into venues and act as the middle-ground between the kids and what they see on the screen, by facilitating activities like crafts or group games. This activity combined with 30 minutes of animated short films provided by Flatpack creates a fun and focused environment for the kids, and offers a little more interactivity than a traditional film screening.

To offer these events to venues, we need to train and skill-up some comperes - and that's where you come in! Flatpack: Assemble have teamed up with Birmingham-based theatre company Little Earthquake to provide 2 days of free training for successful applicants, out of whom some will go on to facilitate screenings across the West Midlands.

For more information, and to access the application form, see the blog post on the Flatpack website here.

The deadline for applications is 9am, Friday 6th January 2017.
