Cultures combined: Art and science, The Royal Institution

  • London
  • combined arts, interdisciplinary arts
  • ri@ri.ac.uk

Description

Historically considered as complementary forms of knowledge, art and science parted ways as a result of the specialisation of the nineteenth century. Today their trajectories seem to intersect again, with a new emphasis on collaborative projects that see artists and scientists working side by side in the form of residencies, public engagement projects, and much more. But what do art and science really have to gain from each other? Join a panel of artists and scientists at the Royal Institution's historic building in Mayfair for an evening of discussion on the benefits of this new (old!) way of thinking about interdisciplinary collaboration, facilitated by Dr. Chiara Ambrosio (UCL).

Lebedek: Sunday Artist Shindig (July) / Warts and All Theatre / East Midlands

Lebedek: Sunday Artist Shindig (July), Warts and All Theatre

Description

Drawing on the diverse cultural heritage and musical pedigree of its members, Lebedek present their unique and fresh sound of pan-European music. The four members of the band are all masters of their craft, and include a Ukrainian accordionist, a Macedonian violinist, a Polish/Dutch/Jewish violinist and a pure-bred Englishman!

Lebedek's music is drawn from their diverse cultural traditions and their music is their take on their combined heritage  a melting pot of musical influences and ideas from their different backgrounds. They play in many different environments, including festivals and arts centres, and they are also involved in Rural Touring, a scheme which brings the arts to the more remote rural communities. When you attend one of Lebedeks concert performances, you never quite know what to expect, but you do know that you will witness superb musicianship and an eclectic selection of material. There is an ever-evolving repertoire, and you may well hear a Hungarian dance tune arranged by Brahms, followed by a traditional Russian folk song, an Irish air, a Ukrainian Kolomayka and an interesting arrangement of a well known pop song!

Anime Architecture: Backgrounds of Japan / House of Illustration / London / London

Anime Architecture: Backgrounds of Japan, House of Illustration

Description

This is the UK’s first ever exhibition of handmade background illustrations for classic sci-fi anime films.

It features drawings and paintings from some of the most influential productions in the genre’s 1990s heyday, including Production I.G’s phenomenally influential 1995 film Ghost in the Shell.

This collection of artists, who share an interest in presenting convincing visions of future worlds, have had a defining influence on the style of anime we think of as typical today.

The show includes Hiromasa Ogura’s watercolour paintings for Ghost in the Shell, an anime epic that informed pioneering sci-fi works such as The Matrix and Avatar. Inspired by Asia’s emerging megacities and based on photographs of Hong Kong, Ogura’s work depicts the striking contrast between a derelict Chinese town and ruthless urban development.

Pencil drawings by Takashi Watabe – one of the most important Japanese illustrators of his generation – for 2008’s sequel Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence also feature. His meticulously realistic style has become a hallmark of Japanese anime films as a whole.

The exhibition also includes work from Patlabor: The Movie (1989) and Metropolis(2001), by Mamoru Oshii and Atsushi Takeuchi.

Since the success of Akira (1988) and Ghost in the Shell, Japanese anime films have been at the heart of global pop culture. A live action remake of Ghost in the Shell starring Scarlett Johansson was released on 31 March 2017.

In association with Les Jardins des Pilotes, Berlin

Until 10 Sep 2017, 10am - 6pm every day except Mondays.

Bankside Gallery Thames Riverside, 48 Hopton St, London SE1 9JH Tel: 020 7928 7521

To attend the exhibition preview please request the invitation at info@nataliaavdeeva.com

Hidden vistas, secret coastlines and unexplored beauty spots of the British countryside are revealed in a new series of immersive landscape paintings by the Russian artist Natalia Avdeeva to be held this summer at Bankside Gallery. Avdeeva was born and spent her childhood in the Altai region of Siberia, a country with a starkly different environment to the UK. Since arriving in London in 2005, she has been fascinated with the British landscape: “ I love the constantly changing hues and dramatic skies in Britain, the tremendous variety of landscapes and in particular the low tides where natural treasures are revealed and then swept away at the blink of an eye.” She says.Avdeeva works a great deal outdoors - in all climates - as she likes to almost become a part of the landscape that she is painting. “Working ‘en plein air’ forces me out of the comfort zone of my studio and up on the cliffs of Devon and the streets of London.” She explains. “I get challenged by the weather, passers-by, the changing lights and temperatures. Each expedition is an adventure that I try to capture in my work. The experiences are often challenging, but always rewarding.”

Exhibition dates: 20 June-2 July 2017 Open: Daily 11am-6pm

Open Call for Artists - 'Stimulus' in Athens, Greece / Art Number 23 / London

Description

'Stimulus' - Athens, Greece

Just a few days before the ending of our show in Berlin and we are now accepting applications for the second part of this exhibition which will take place in Athens, Greece.

Please find all the necessary information below:

Dates: 26th June - 30th June 2017

Venue: Municipal Art Gallery of Piraeus

Deadline: 10th June 2017

The aim of this exhibition is to present some of the various incentives that motivate artists to produce a work of art. These could be, amongst others, filtering and analysing the information we receive; cultural influences and background; building relationships and observing our social environment; what we find aesthetically pleasing; past experiences, traumas; and many more.

This selection of artworks will also reflect on what leads artists to create a type of language, through their concepts and techniques, in order to express their perspectives, their feelings, and their position on subjects of their interest.

In addition to the above, it would be interesting to observe how sometimes artists can be triggered by the same or similar impulses, but interpret them in different ways, or choose diverse approaches to portray them.

For more information please visit the 'Artists Opportunities' section on our website:

 www.artnumber23.uk

info@artnumber23.uk

Please note that we will start selecting artists before the deadline so we would suggest you to apply as soon as possible.

Thank you so much for your interest, we look forward to receiving your artworks. Good luck!

a-n Assembly - Leeds / a-n The Artists Information Company / Yorkshire

Description

Assembly Leeds
Thursday 29th & Friday 30th June 2017

For the final of the a-n Assembly events taking place during May and June this year, we will be visiting Leeds. Working in collaboration with East Street Arts, Assembly Leeds will be hosted at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists and headquarters of East Street Arts.

After nearly a decade of austerity there is simply less and less money to go around in the arts, however this does not seem to have stunted the growth of the creative sector. Artists continue to carve out new opportunities for themselves but the question remains of how we all make it work both emotionally and financially.

Assembly Leeds explores the theme of resilience with a special day-long event, curated by East Street Arts, that seeks to bring people together to share stories, insights and experiences on how we survive and thrive in the arts. This session will be complemented by the chance to attend professional development opportunities (with tea and cake!) brought to Leeds by the wider a-n team.

Platform for Emerging Arts #15

Proposed Exhibition dates    19 – 29 July 2017 (Private View 18 July 2017)

This is a call-out to emerging artists who wish to participate in a curated group exhibition as part of Leyden Gallery’s quarterly lease programme – ‘Platform for Emerging Arts’

Leyden Gallery are offering a unique opportunity to exhibit new work at an innovative and reputable London art gallery. This platform show is part of their ethos, which aims to promote emerging contemporary artists in relation to established and recognised names in the art world. This opportunity arises only once every quarter year when they open their gallery space to enable emergent and unrepresented artists to submit work to them for consideration in order to appear as part of their gallery lease programme, which is offered at exceptional value.

Following the successful realisation of their previous Platform Exhibitions, they are once again planning to open their gallery space to enable innovative and talented artists the chance to exhibit their work. This is an open call for work in all mediums.

This quarterly gallery programme for unrepresented artists offers the gallery an opportunity to encounter work by artists who may be suitable for future representation in non-leased curated shows.

Ritual, Astrology & Performance / Astrology for Artists / London / London

Description

Please join us for an Astrology for Artists event @Chisenhale Dance

Saturday 10th of June 1pm - 5pm
Tickets: £25 * * purchase in advance essential * *

By sharing her artistic and astrological practices Madeleine will establish the connections between performance, astrology and how they relate to ritual, enchantment, defamiliarization, the sacred and most important an experience of a liminal state.

Being an artist is a journey that connects us with who we are, the same as astrology which is a system in constant movement and which show us the potential of who we can become.

When we create work we are expanding our mind, our physique, our emotions, we are finding new ways of communicating and thinking about ourselves, we are in some way facing the unknown, meaning a transitional experience that takes us creatively from one order to another. This workshop is an exploration to leave the door open to the unknown – that’s where the most important things come from, where you yourself come from and where you’ll go.

As Rebecca Solnit wrote in The Field Guide of Getting Lost ‘I Have Lost Myself Though I Know Where I Am’. After reading her book I kept asking myself – How can we assert ourselves while being lost? Or when we perform? Where does that assertiveness come from?

The workshop will primarily feature a combination of performance acts and activities, astrological understanding focusing on Neptune, the planet that rules Pisces, each participant will be given an astrological task during the workshop and we’ll be doing some physical and sensorial exercises to awaken the body, bringing dynamism and aiming to question the transformative power of performance.

Please email the following birth details to astrologyforartists@gmail.com after you have purchased your ticket: Day, Month, Year / City, Country / Exact time (from birth certificate)

Street Art Festival 2017 / Surface Gallery / East Midlands

Description

Street Art Festival 2017
24th June - 15th July
Launch Party: Friday 23rd June, 18:00 - 22:00

This Summer at Surface Gallery, sees the return of the most anarchic, the most spectacular show in town: the Nottingham Street Art Festival. This hugely popular exhibition supports and promotes Nottingham’s vibrant alternative art scene by showcasing some of today’s best local talent.

As Leftlion advised: “check out the Street Art Festival. As with all disciplines, street art takes many different forms and it’s not all about spray painting ‘Harry woz ere’ on the wall. It can be anything from defaced images of models in magazines to bejazzled pictures of Miley Cyrus. The central exhibition spills out onto the alley walls at the back of the gallery, and the interior salon-hang gives you a right eyeful”.

If that wasn’t enough, we are also accepting submissions from artists from around the world. In keeping with the spirit of the occasion, Surface Gallery is taking submissions from established and emerging artists working in a variety of disciplines, making it a truly inclusive and eclectic affair.

Deadline for Submissions: Saturday 17th June, 5pm

The Street Art Festival launches with a DJ set from Plates Records. You’ll also be able to sample some nicely spiced cooking from Uncle Wayne’s Jerk Station. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales from the funkiest brewery in Nottingham: Springhead--probably the hippest hops in town.

Prizes will be awarded on the night by our panel of judges: Kid Acne, internationally acclaimed street artist, Geeta Pendse of BBC East Midlands, and The Finsbury Park Deltics, prize-winner from last year’s Street Art Festival. Rob Rennie will also be awarding a special prize from Hung Up, Nottingham’s only dedicated street art gallery.

This is a great opportunity to pick up some terrific art at affordable prices.

Selected participants will receive a minimum of £80 to make the costume and present in at the ARTWALK after REWILD’s live performance. There will be a makeup and hair artist to assist you in completing the looks on the day as well as professional photography and filming of the outfits and the event.

To apply please send a SHORT PROPOSAL, including VISUALS (illustration, sketch, photos etc.) of your intended design ideas and examples of previous work. Specify if you would want someone specific to wear and display it on the night, or whether you want one of our models to wear your creation.

Marking the Market

Boca2Mouth

26thMay from 12 pm to 5pm

A group of artists will bring the Long Man of Wilmington to life in the Open Market on the 26thMay.

Using the idea of the market as a hub of the city, a place where the country crosses over into the city, a place for the exchange of goods and produce, news, entertainment and new ideas, a group of artists will be recreating an iconic image from the Sussex landscape, marking this reciprocal relationship.

Marking the market is about marking the importance of markets in communal life. To bring the Long Man of Wilmington with his connotations of history, ancestry and humankind to a city market will remind participant and passers-by of the importance of integration and sharing communities.

The artists will be working all day in the Open Market with images, objects and sounds and members of the public are invited to visit, see how it develops and collaborate in the making.

About ManMade:

The artists participating are:
Brighton-based Ed Briggs, Mim King, Jim Sanders, Ben Sheehan, Xelís de Toro and Vv
