The Trial of Superdebthunterbot - Helen Knowles

Description

Law School Tour of The trial of Superdebthunterbot

Film screening and Q and A

Thu 8 December 2016

18:45 – 21:30 GMT

S-2.18. Strand Building, Strand Campus, King's College london

Film by Helen Knowles

Narrative
A debt collecting company, Debt BB buys the student loan book from the government for more than it is worth, on the condition it can use unconventional means to collect debt. Debt BB codes an algorithm to ensure fewer loan defaulters by targeting individuals through the use of big
data, placing job adverts on web pages they frequent. Superdebthunterbot has a “capacity to self-educate, to learn and to modify it’s coding sequences independent of human oversight” (Susan Schullppi, Deadly Algorithms). Five individuals have died as a result of the algorithm’s actions, by partaking in unregulated medical trials. In the eyes of the International Ether Court, can the said algorithm be found guilty?

Background

The Trial of Superdebthunterbot was first performed as an artwork on the opening night of the exhibition Collaborate! at Oriel Sycarth Gallery. The work was performed by lawyers; Oana Labontu Radu and Lauries Elks who wrote the prosecution and defence speeches and TV actor, Mark Frost who was the judge. The jury was made up of the audience on the opening night of the exhibition. The algorithm is housed in a see - through computer made by artist Daniel Dressel which sits in the dock.

In May 2016, the performance was restaged the performance at Southwark Crown Court and a 45 minute film of the same title was shot. The film was premiered during the the Goldsmiths MFA show.

Semiconductor - Where Shapes Come From

Semiconductor - Where Shapes Come From, Phoenix Cinema & Art Centre

Description

Fri 10 Feb – Sun 26 Mar

http://ift.tt/2fcLtlb

Where Shapes Comes From is a moving image work co-commissioned by Phoenix and the EDP Foundation which considers how science translates nature, on an atomic scale.

Filmed in the mineral sciences laboratory at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, a scientist goes about his daily work in rock and mineral preparatory labs; cutting up large meteorites and preparing mineral samples for scientific study. Accompanying this, mineralogist Jeff Post describes the coming together of atoms to form matter. He details formations of organised structures and patterns as if they are happening in real-time, in front of our eyes, transcending time and space.

Raw seismic data, collected from the land forming Mariana deep sea trench, has been converted directly into sound and controls computer generated animations, which are composited into the labs. They depict interpretations of visual scientific forms associated with atomic structures, and the technologies which capture them. Sitting alongside these animated formations are hand-made assemblages of discarded materials and other curiosities, which now bear human signatures. They unite in bringing a sense of playfulness and personal touch to the ordinarily rigorous framework of science. By combining these scientific processes, languages and products associated with matter formation in the context of the everyday, they become fantastical and strange encouraging us to consider how science translates nature and question our experiences of the physical world.

Filmed at the Mineral Sciences Laboratory, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington D.C. during its 100thyear.
Audio made from Mariana Trench seismic data courtesy of the IRIS (Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology) Network.
Dialogue: Jeffrey E. Post, Geologist, Curator in Charge, Mineral Collection, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington D.C., U.S.A.
Scientist: Jonathon Cooper

Sound Out is an experimental and durational participatory performance by Sharon Gal for a group of voices in a public space. Each of us has a voice, every voice is unique and anyone can take part.

You will experiment with different vocal sounds and expressions, interact with other participants and audience and respond to the space’s acoustics. You are invited to share your voice and imagination and breathe life into the space.

Historically we were always trying to capture the fleeting image, one that reflected reality as we saw it. By contrast, in a world of iPhones and Instagram we now often see images that present an altered sense of reality. Although photography is a creative art form in itself, the concept of this theme showcases the results achieved when camera settings, editing techniques and creative angles are used to the photographers advantage.

All art is subjective and we fully expect visitors to be challenged by the work on display. Some images may be considered beautiful, while others are thought-provoking; some may even challenge your perception on what constitutes a photographic image.

with Dr Nicholas Tromans (Watts Gallery)

Talk "William Holman Hunt: Pre-Raphaelite and Orientalist"

from 6:30-8:00pm, The University of York

William Holman Hunt was one of the original members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, formed in London in 1848. According to his own account, Hunt was the only member of the group to remain strictly loyal to its founding principles of realism and precision.

This talk will explore how Hunt’s commitment to visual truth led him to become the most important and original British artistic interpreter of Palestine during the age of Imperialism. With characteristic determination, Hunt not only visited but lived in Jerusalem for extended periods, immersing himself in the turbulent religious politics of the period. These experiences led the artist to create landscapes, biblical scenes, and the iconic Scapegoat.

Hunt’s attitudes towards Islam and Islamic art were of course fundamental to his career in the Middle East. Dr Tromans will suggest that by looking at the case of Hunt, we are able to understand how ideas about Islam informed Western realism’s self-identity.

Call for Submissions - November Contest

  • London, All UK
  • literature, visual arts
  • KM Elkes a3@writingmaps.com

Description

The A3 Review, the arts magazine that acts like a map, is calling for submissions for its November Contest. The theme is Playhouse. Deadline is 26th Nov, 2016.

The concept of a playhouse is a rich one for writers: they are places where ‘make believe’ happens. Imagine situations where a garden playhouse is a place of sanctuary, or safety, or danger for a child. What happens in playhouses when adults are no longer around?

Create a surreal piece about a playhouse that’s very different when you crawl inside. Think about different locations and types of playhouses – treehouses, dens, forts and castles made by children in the woods, on wasteground, fields, railway sidings, rubbish dumps. Contrast one child’s beautifully crafted garden playhouse with another’s den of old planks and discarded rugs and carpets.

We welcome short stories, flash fiction, poetry, comics, graphic stories, a snippet of memoir, photographs, illustrations, and any combination of the above. The only restriction is a word-limit of 150 and images should fit well into an A6 panel.

For more details and to submit your work (only through our Submittable page), go to: http://ift.tt/1Q3w0Qz

Creative ENRG Video Commission - Open Call

Description

Creative ENRG is the business support programme for the arts & culture sectors in Hull and East Riding.

Hull City of Culture 2017 brings a unique opportunity to celebrate both the creativity and entrepreneurial potentials of the area.

The Commission

As part of our commitment to support new, developing and established creative businesses to thrive we wish to commission a film making/videography company to produce a video ‘diary’ of three creative business journeys.

This can be in the form of a series of interviews at strategic stages of each enterprise journey, building a story from start to middle to next steps, or a series of informal interviews interspersed with ‘own’ footage from the creative business.

Ideally we would like a short film to upload every month from one of our three selected businesses, plus a single film feature that offers an overview of all three business journeys throughout 2017.

The shorts need be no longer than 3 mins, with the feature no longer than 10 mins.

How to apply

For application information please visit http://ift.tt/2gnQ2Ji and click on Creative ENRG Video Diaries Commission. Deadline for completed applications Friday December 2nd 2016.

ARCHIVE-AS-METHOD SALON
Working with Visual Documents of the Italian Colonial Heritage

Monday 5th of December 2016, 15.30-18.30

Institute of Modern Languages Research, University London, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU (SH243, 2ndfloor)

Presentations, short-film screenings and Q&A with:
Alessandra Ferrini, Gianmarco Mancosu, Martina Melilli and Jacopo Rinaldi

This Salon brings together artists, filmmakers and historians in order to discuss methodological approaches to the exploration and activation of colonial, archival material. Given the recent interest in the Italian colonial past,  the salon aims to shed light onto a previously marginalised historical period.

The first part of the salon will introduce to the fascist imperial project and its legacy through Gianmarco Mancosu's research based on the newsreels on the Ethiopian War of 1935-36 and Alessandra Ferrini's essay film and pedagogic project Negotiating Amnesia (2015), which is based on archival photographs and propaganda postcards from the same period. The second part of the salon will kick off with Martina Melilli's presentation of an ongoing body of work stemming from her family's history in the Libyan colony and in Italy, after the expulsion of Italians from Libya in 1970. It will be followed by Jacopo Rinaldi's problematisation of the truthfulness of archival material, through his research in the Pirelli Historic Archive (Milan), and the production of works exploring the rubber industry. To conclude, the four researchers will be in conversation and will open up the debate to the public.

Free, but seats are limited. Please email us at mnemoscape@gmail.com to book a place.

Celebrating the Cracker Packers – Public Art Commission

Celebrating the Cracker Packers – Public Art Commission, Carlisle City Council

Description

Carlisle City Council invites proposals for a major new work of public art at a gateway site, from artists with a successful track record of creating art in the public realm.

The commission will complete a public realm improvements scheme for the Caldewgate area.  The Council wishes to celebrate a key element of Carlisle’s distinctive social and industrial history, the world famous biscuit factory which bears the group name McVities, but is still widely known locally as Carr’s.  Many local families retain connections with the past and present workforce of the factory.  We seek artists’ proposals for a new work that will celebrate that, historically, almost exclusively female workforce, the ‘Cracker Packers’.

Artists/designers are invited to register their interest via the ProContract Portal:

http://ift.tt/2fCy054

Commission proposals can only be accepted through the ProContract Portal, and must include all the items of documentation specified.  This system is used for all procurement by Carlisle City Council, and forms part of the Council’s commitment to equal opportunities.

For full details of the commission, go to Find Opportunities.  To search, you can select The Chest portal, select Carlisle City Council under organisations, or search for the title Celebrating the Cracker Packers - Provision of a work of public art at Caldewgate, Carlisle.  The commission can also be identified by the Project ID DN218958.

Once you have registered your interest, you will receive access to the Invitation to Tender (ITT), together with full details of the commission process.

For assistance with the process, call The Chest support line on 0330 005 0352 or email ProContractSuppliers@proactis.com , quoting the title and project ID.

How To Rally An Arts Club Around A Single Project

  • South East
  • combined arts, film, interdisciplinary arts, photography, music, theatre
  • Rhonda Merrick news@katfm.org.uk

Description

Imagine running a non-profit arts centre that's actually not making a profit! In fact, it's teetering on the edge of financial disaster because the project's attracted so many people, it's outgrown your ability to do most things yourself but there's no hiring budget. Try teaching piano class, film club or choir whilst chatting with potential new members, who dropped-in to enquire about joining your club. I've done that, but without careful handling, it interrupts the flow of learning in class.

Anyway, there we were teetering... even as membership was growing. I thought 'Something must be done!'. So, I wrote a book.

On the surface this might sound slightly un-helpful in managing growth. But I teach weekly piano, filmmaking and production to several dozen people. After writing 'Pre-grade 1, Easiest Piano and Music Theory Book', I rallied the entire club around the project.

  • Film and Production Clubs are making demonstration videos from the book.
  • Piano students are playing various examples for these videos.

Beginners use the book because it saves time and money. For £3.00 our students can download an all-in-one piano and theory book or buy a printed copy from our shop for £3.50. This is less than half the cost of buying 2 books at retail.

Now, everyone here is learning to read, write and play music to the same high standard. Result! But... some of you detail orientated readers might be wondering 'What about the kids TV show?'. I wrote a television series called 'The Brilliant Book' in 2014 and managed to get it on TV.

A group of 5-9 year olds are the 'Art Department' for Series 2 and they take their role very seriously. The Film and Production Club and Performance Choir are doing the audio/visual work and our Concert Band is recording the music for all 6 episodes. The project has attracted a couple volunteers and I've entered the wonderful world of funding with gusto if not finesse. We'll be alright and I have a feeling, if you read all this, you will too.

Town Hall Talks - Made by Migrants: Battersea and Beyond

  • London
  • libraries, literature, museums
  • Holiday Donaldson holidayd@bac.org.uk

Description

Come and explore the rich history of migration in the local area. Hear stories of people who have arrived in south west London and made this corner of the city their new home.

Speakers on the night:

Writer Mike Phillips was born in Georgetown, Guyana, and grew up in London. He worked for the BBC as a journalist and broadcaster before becoming a lecturer in media studies at the University of Westminster and has written full-time since 1992. Mike Phillips co-wrote Windrush: The Irresistible Rise of Multi-Racial Britain (1998) to accompany a BBC television series. Another of his books, London Crossings: A Biography of Black Britain (2001), is a series of interlinked essays and stories. Mike served on the board of trustees for the Heritage Lottery Fund, writes for the Guardian, and is cross-cultural curator at the Tate.

Mike’s talk will focus on John Archer, London’s first black mayor (the son of a Barbadian father and an Irish mother). John Archer famously declared in a speech at the Town Hall: “My election tonight means a new era. You have made history tonight. For the first time in the history of the English nation a man of colour has been elected as mayor of an English borough.”

Mike will also explore the significance of the Windrush passenger ship bringing migrants from the Caribbean, marking the start of the post-war immigration boom.

Sophie Henderson practised as an immigration barrister, is judge of the Asylum and Immigration tribunal and since 2011 has been Director of the Migration Museum Project. She’ll be talking about the need now more than ever to have a Migration Museum in the UK and how this can be achieved.

We’ll have a special live performance from BAC’s Homegrown young performers who will share their own stories of migration.
