POCAHONTAS 400 – PEACE & RECONCILIATION
Artist Brief
Gravesham Borough Council wishes to commission two visual artists as part of a wide programme of activities to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Pocahontas’ arrival and death in Gravesend, culminating in March 2017.
Artists are invited to submit a proposal for two separate commissions on the theme of Pocahontas 400 – Peace & Reconciliation:
Commission 1. Sculpture
- To design and build a permanent, two-part sculptural artwork, half of which will remain in Gravesend , and the other half will journey to Pocahontas’s homeland of Virginia, USA.
Commission 2. Community Engagement
- To develop and deliver a series of community engagement workshops to create flags for the Pocahontas 400 commemoration parade and exhibition in March 2017.
Both commissions will take place between January - March 2017.

Fees & budgets
Visual Artist – Sculpture
- £4,500 (includes all fees, expenses and materials for completing the artwork).
Visual Artist – Community Engagement
- £2,000 (includes all fees and expenses. A separate budget of up to £500 for materials).

Interviews for both commissions will take place during w/c 5 December in Gravesend (date & venue to be confirmed). Up to four artists will be invited to expand their sculpture proposal prior to the interview. A fee of £250 each will be payable for this.
