Carlisle City Council invites proposals for a major new work of public art at a gateway site, from artists with a successful track record of creating art in the public realm. 

The commission will complete a public realm improvements scheme for the Caldewgate area.  The Council wishes to celebrate a key element of Carlisle’s distinctive social and industrial history, the world famous biscuit factory which bears the group name McVities, but is still widely known locally as Carr’s.  Many local families retain connections with the past and present workforce of the factory.  We seek artists’ proposals for a new work that will celebrate that, historically, almost exclusively female workforce, the ‘Cracker Packers’.

Commission proposals can only be accepted through the ProContract Portal, and must include all the items of documentation specified.  This system is used for all procurement by Carlisle City Council, and forms part of the Council’s commitment to equal opportunities.
