Brigitte Aphrodite is a punk, feminist showgirl, and poetical music performance artist who has a loyal following due to her approach to multidisciplinary art and social expression. In her former years she has toured her music with the likes of Kate Nash and Josie Long.  Bri is most recently known for her critically acclaimed show - 'My Beautiful Black Dog' - a part gig, part theatre, modern day, punk musical exploring depression. The show sold out at the Edinburgh Fringe circuit, was featured on the BBC 10'O Clock News and in the Guardian and Elle mag.
Inspired by the spirit of punk, Brigitte is a Bowie-obsessed 'feminist showgirl' who excels in turning theatre about 'issues' into riotous musical glitter-filled extravaganzas with a serious core.
Bri is a one of kind, trained artist, a breath of fresh air in her approach and her character compels a wide audience.

Brigitte will be performing a 45 minute set, followed by a Q&A about her craft, her process and what brought her to where she is today!

£10 (£8 Concessions) in advance or £12.50 on the door.

The Sunday Artist Shindig is hosted by Warts and All Theatre in partnership with Foodies.rocks in Northampton.

We have decided to give each monthly event a specific artistic focus. We will host guest artists working across a variety of disciplines. Each month the artist/s will share their craft and process through performance, workshops and discussion.
.
The Sunday.Artist.Shindig is a relaxed monthly event to help connect, grow, and support artists. Each month the style of the event is driven by a specific artistic focus.

Working with difficult reluctant awkward individuals & groups? / noh budget films / London

Description

A training course for Facilitators in dealing with Resistance

This highly practical hands-on course is particularly suited to facilitators and group leaders who want to acquaint themselves with the challenges involved in working with ‘hard’ groups within prisons, hospitals, probation centres, youth clubs, pupil referral units and holiday schemes. You will be able to experience, practise and learn a variety of techniques in managing and dealing with resistance and disengagement in challenging settings.

The facilitator has to perform radical and innovative functions. It’s different from a theatre director, drama teacher, youth leader, a shaman, cultural activist, therapist or a joker, yet it borrows aspects of these roles.

The facilitator needs to select the most appropriate games, exercises and techniques to bring out the best of the group, which means looking at the geographical, social and cultural context of the workshop session.

How does the facilitator deal with the challenges involved in working with ‘hard’ groups behind closed doors? What does a facilitator do? What are the nuts and bolts of facilitation?

Who is this for?

People who are in related professions such arts practitioners, social care, therapy, mental health, education, community arts or personal development as well as students and trainees in such professions.

Applications are also encouraged from social inclusion partners who are interested in understanding the role and value of arts-based practice to the groups they work with. It is also for Facilitators, artists, teachers, directors, workshop leaders and activists and anyone who works with difficult groups.

The training covers techniques with explanations, instructions and suggestions to help you develop your own style and approach. The techniques can be readily adapted to a wide range of difficult settings with adults and young people.

This will also be an opportunity for professional development, networking and skill sharing so as to enable continued high standards of good practice.

London UK Friday 12th May 10.00am – 5.00pm

Cost £59.00

All Participants receive a free TRAINING MANUAL on completion.

Some things people had to say:

“All in all, it was a great night full of jaw dropping talented artists.  Maya Levy never fails to do a wonderful job picking the best artists and performers for her themed night which are always thoroughly entertaining.” (The Other Arts Review)

"However, it is Maya Levy’s compering that steals the show each time; her unique brand of humour puts the audience at ease and encourages the artists simultaneously. This is carried through to her songs – always tailored to the theme, they show off her beautiful voice and range whilst providing some comic relief each month." Annual Review

5-day Portrait Sculpture workshop with Hazel Reeves / Phoenix Brighton / South East / London

Description

Portrait Sculpture with Hazel Reeves (Spring)

Phoenix Arts, Brighton, East Sussex

20-24 March 2017, Monday to Friday, 11.30am – 5.30pm, £330 (includes materials)

Sculpting a portrait in clay can be a very rewarding experience. This course will explore how to observe heads – how to see their differences and similarities, and in turn learn how to translate this understanding into a sculpture which captures a likeness of the sitter. During the five days a life-sized clay portrait of a live sitter will be built on an armature, then prepared for firing. This concentrated modelling will be interspersed with fun exercises – with clay and without – to help train up the eye and hands. Course fee includes most materials but please bring an A4 sketchpad and drawing implement (pencil, pen etc).  This course will be taught in a way suitable for those with experience of sculpting in clay and those new to it. Firing is not included. Maximum: 8.

Book through Eventbrite.

The Mothership artist residencies / Unincorporated Collaborations / South West

  • South West
  • crafts, combined arts, dance, film, interdisciplinary arts, literature, photography, music, theatre, visual arts
  • Anna Best me@annabest.info

Description

Unincorporated collaborations launched The Mothership in Dorset in March 2016. This opportunity is for contemporary artists working in any media seeking the qualities of a secluded retreat and potential collaboration. The residencies can range in length from a weekend to six weeks and should explore the following themes: climate change/weather, rural social/political, land/agriculture and childhood/parenthood/the domestic sphere.

Artists are invited to work independently on a project of their own choice.  Work will be selected on the basis of current practice and there are no expectations of a presentation, although this can be facilitated.

Residents will live and work in a large, purpose-built ‘eco-studio’ with wood fired heating, kitchenette, and a compost toilet and shower. It is suitable for families and groups, as well as individuals or couples. There is also the option of staying in the Buccaneer caravan for your residency, which best suits individuals or couples. The studio and caravan are located next door to the home of artist Anna Best, her children and several animals, embedded in an ancient wood in rural Dorset. It is situated on a bus route but ‘off the beaten track’ so artists can choose how isolated or uninterrupted they want to be.

This is an unfunded programme with a fee charged per person per week towards overheads. This is £100 per person per week for the studio, £50 for the caravan.  Stays of less than a week will be £30 per night per person for the studio, £10 for the caravan. Negotiation is always possible and this sum may be substituted by contributing to communal tasks at £10 per hour.

Applications are open all year. Please visit http://ift.tt/2lxOfTo to read further information on the programme and how to apply.

24 April to 3 July 2017  Mondays 10am to 5 pm

"Anthony Daley is right in his element with this course on 20-21 Century painting techniques."

Learn the methods and respond to the multiple developments in painting and the art movements of the 20th-21st Century. We will cover the developments in post-war America and its period of ‘buckets- full- of- paint’ attitude – the sheer abundance and the abandonment of Abstract Expressionism. We will then consider the methods and materials of today’s painting by visiting contemporary practices including urban graffiti which has superficial resemblances that takes us full circle back to the primordial environmental mark making of cave paintings.

The course will also touch on the historical context, techniques, methods and materials of the physical substance of the painting at its confluence with the emotional and spiritual driving forces behind the invention and practise of this profound human activity.
Our aim is to provide you with an inspirational springboard to your own painting practice.

Festivals for Europe, Europe for Festivals - extended application deadline!

Due to a large number of last minute applications, the system remains open so there is still time to apply.

www.effe.eu.

What is this?
It’s a biennial project and the purpose is two-fold: outward looking – to promote cultural tourism across Europe with a guide to the finest European festivals (published guidebook and website listings) and inwardly to the sector - by increasing the support and strengthening the connections between European festival professionals (through various events – Label Festivals (see below) are funded to attend - and an online platform).

For once, it’s genuinely not a complicated application process.

As the EFFE Hub in the UK, in this age of hard Brexit, BAFA considers this one positive way to keep our European links strong.

Open Call to Artists / Synthetic Ecology Moving Image Festival / South East

Description

Synthetic Ecology seeks new artists’ moving image, seminars and workshops that focus towards a new materialist ecology and politics of petroleum, domestication, industrialisation, animal symbols, cities, pop culture and technology.

Deadline: 11:59pm 13th March 2017

To submit your video/lecture/workshop/performance proposal, please visit our site for more details at: syntheticecology.org

-----

Synthetic Ecology (SE) is an autonomous platform devoted to screening contemporary artists’ moving image, hosting events and creating opportunities for artists that push the boundaries of digital territories, geopolitics and ecological thought. SE aims to engage emerging and established artists from different cultures and communities, connected by a sensitivity to bridging ecological thought and technological socio-political issues. SE is critical of ecological and environmental art being inaccessible and un-relatable to contemporary experimental artists’ practice, and therefore aims to form a critical and shifting platform for ecological research and artist’s moving image.

In our first iteration, Synthetic Ecology will host a two day festival of contemporary artists’ moving image screenings, talks and peer-to-peer professional development workshops for selected artists.

Curated by Mikhail Karikis, Lydia Heath (O N C A) and Louis Joe Sainsbury.

O N C A Gallery, Brighton: 1st–2nd April 2017

Action Research Evaluation Project / Big Brum TIE / West Midlands

Description

Big Brum TIE have just begun a two year action research project to better understand the impact of our work and explore how our work fits with the needs of schools, in the context of significant changes within the education sector. This will enable us to shape the future development of the company. This project has been funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

We have commissioned People and Organisation Ltd to work with us to develop an evaluation framework, tools and methods for measuring the impact of our work on young people, teachers and schools. They have also brought in the expertise of Rebbecca Hemmings from Strawberry Words and Iris Bertz and we will also be working with an advisory group, made up of  teachers, researchers, Big Brum Board members and others involved in the arts and the education sectors.

Big Brum has delivered Theatre in Education (TIE) programmes for 35 years, working with thousands of children and young people across all age ranges and abilities. The Company’s approach involves using theatre and drama to explore deep questions and concepts with young people, helping them to make meaning of their lives, better understand the world around them and improve their educational outcomes.

We will be sharing our findings and evaluation methods at various points throughout the project. We hope this project will generate useful information and evaluation tools for other TIE and arts education companies and schools. We would love to hear from anyone who has done similar action research and evaluation projects.
