EXPLORING CROSS-GENDER CASTING
With Pete Gallagher
Cross-gender casting is not a new concept; historically we know that boys played women for professional reasons and, somewhat less frequently, vice versa for entirely different ones! However in recent years we have seen a resurgence resulting in some towering gender-blind performances such as Glenda Jackson as Lear, Fiona Shaw as Richard II and David Suchet as Lady Bracknell. These casting choices are made not only to arouse audience interest but for dramatic and social exploration purposes too, and in this workshop we will do the same. Led by Pete Gallagher who has experienced performing a role requiring a midway male-to-female character switch, and based on his passion for better psychological and social understanding, you can come along with the relevant material for your chosen opposite sex character and perhaps release an inner you – broadening your understanding of convention and perhaps even giving you casting alternatives! You never know, with a greater understanding of the opposite sex, it might even lead to a happier life too!
Cost: £30
