Description
THIS IS JUST A PENCIL SHARPENER. Part of COLLECTIVE at DC1, Eastbourne
Dear Artists
I want to make a collaborative installation for the COLLECTIVE exhibition, and, on glancing around my house and studio, I quickly discovered that I could immediately lay my hands on no less than nine pencil sharpeners – in themselves, small, unremarkable, yet sculptural objects, many of them with a personal history attached. The perfect beginnings for a collection.
However, nine just isn't going to be enough, so, I’m asking you to help me gather together an extraordinary collection of pencil sharpeners for the exhibition – 1000 would be good. They don’t need to be special, or fancy or clever or gimmicky, just any old Helix (or any other make) will do – plastic, metal or wood; graffiti-ed, doodled on, paint spattered or good as new – all are welcome in our collection. In order to accommodate all comers, there will be 3 classes in the great pencil sharpener collection:
Class 1 – sculptural functional
Class 2 – novelty
Class 3 – sharpeners with a story
Please send your sharpeners to: JUDITH ALDER (SHARPENERS), C/O THE LEAF HALL, 51 SEASIDE, EASTBOURNE, BN22 7NB or pop them in the collection box which will be inside the entrance door at The Leaf Hall during opening hours, 11am to 3pm, Tuesday to Saturday. Or call Judith on 07713 287365.
If your pencil sharpener does have a special story, please place the sharpener and a note of your story in an envelope with your name and contact details so that I can get in touch, and so that ultimately you can be reunited with your sharpener.
Thank you!
Judith
COLLECTIVE is the opening exhibition at the new Devonshire Collective creative cluster in Seaside Road, Eastbourne, due to open in December 2016. The exhibition will include work by artists working across a range of disciplines with a special interest in collaboration, collections or collecting, or those who work in series, creating a collection of works which in its entirety is greater than the sum of its parts.
