Doors open 10.30am for registration.
11.00 to 1.00pm: Talk and discussion
1.00 to 3.00pm: One to one performance by Annette Foster
The Art as Gift Symposiumhas emerged from Denise Weston’s project:Women of a Nervous Disposition and responds to one of its central themes, the relationship between art and the gift. This will be explored in two ways; through a talk and through a performance. The talk, by the artist and critic Peter Suchin (Art Monthly), will focus on the work of Marcel Duchamp. The performance by Annette Foster, will evoke the life and work of Camille Claudel, one of the subjects of Weston’s paintings.
Talk and Discussion (11.00am – 1.00pm)
Peter Suchin’s talk builds upon the Nottingham-based Art & Theory Reading Group’ (http://ift.tt/2r0aAc3) intensive reading of Jacques Derrida’s 1991 text:Given Time: 1. Counterfeit Money, a work that analyses the concept of the gift. Suchin will relate Derrida’s thinking to one of contemporary art’s landmark works, Marcel Duchamp’s:Étant donnés: 1° la chute d’eau / 2° le gaz d’éclairage… (Given: 1. The Waterfall, 2. The Illuminating Gas . . . ). Addressing the question: “What is Given in Marcel Duchamp’sGiven?”
The talk and discussion is limited to 30 places.
One to One performance (1.00pm – 3.00pm)
Annette Foster's performance will evoke the life and work of Camille Claudel.
