Our reality is a succession of unique moments, each moment impacting on our well-being.  Our annual exhibition at the Institute of Mental Health is an opportunity for artists to express through art how they are experiencing and reacting to each of those moments.

About Arts & the Institute of Mental Health

The Arts have been a key feature of the spaces of the Institute of Mental Health since it opened in 2006. The summer open exhibition is our main event, but there are solo exhibitions which have offered platforms for service users and artists who have an especial interest in mental health to show their work. The Arts can educate and raise consciousness as well as mediate in processes of social change and awareness, community engagement and personal well-being. It can be a therapeutic activity that helps people to tell their story, but it can also be more than lens or a mirror to human nature, rather it can change the world we live in. And so it is fitting that the arts, and especially service user art, has been promoted at IMH and will continue to have dedicated space, because the idea of making the world a better place for people with mental health problems is at the very heart of this Institute.

The Institute of Mental Health is a partnership between Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust & the University of Nottingham.

Submission Information

Please complete our online application form and upload good quality images of your artwork no later than 3rd April 2017. Only 2D artworks will be selected for the exhibition. Artists can submit up to 2 artworks each.

Alternatively, download the entry form and email it to info@city-arts.org.uk

You will be informed if you artwork has been selected in the week of the 3rdApril.

Delivery of artwork: no later than 26th April 2017

Please deliver small to medium sized artwork toCity Arts, 11-13 Hockley, Nottingham, NG1 1FH. Large scale work must be hand delivered or by courier directly to the Institute of Mental Health.

Exhibition opening: 17th May 2017

Exhibition end: 29th September 2017

‘Fancy a cuppa?’ showcases the multi-media work of a range of artists and community groups working across Newcastle. Their work asks us to question what happens when people come together across a year to make art, as well as the conversations and relationships this process might establish.

This work has been supported by Newcastle City Council Art Team who have facilitated people and places in and around the city who, for a variety of reasons, do not always have the opportunity to engage in high quality inclusive arts practice.

We now have just 1 work space, available immediately, at Worthing's new BN14 Art Studios.
This is a "clean" space (approx 68sq ft), as half of a larger shared room: so would suit any desk-based work (illustration, graphic design, creative writing, craft, jewellery, etc) or artists/makers whose work is not too messy.

The Lab Collective are excited to announce the return of their Greenhouse workshop for performers, directors, and makers of interactive and immersive theatre.

Over the course of the sessions Greenhouse will offer the tools to make rich, exciting work to help theatre practitioners understand the structure and conventions of creating live experiences and engaging worlds for their audiences.

The Greenhouse Workshop explores the mechanisms of generating dialogue in an interactive performance setting by covering key topics such as structure, narrative, interactive scripting, character creation, audience agency, conversation, playable spaces, and chaos.

The workshop will culminate in the opportunity to design and build your own interactive installation to play within and explore the new techniques we have developed together.

Award winning theatre company Pants on Fire presents Adventures in Space, a week-long masterclass for professional and semi-professional performances, directors, theatre practitioners, students and the playfully curious.

Now in its 17th year, Pants on Fire’s Adventures in Space offers a unique opportunity to explore essential theatre-making and performance techniques based on the teachings of Jacques Lecoq.

Diving into a world of imagination and play, the focus of this intensive training is both solo and ensemble-based creation through improvisation and devised work. The starting point is the human body and its relationship to the space around it. Participants will develop a stronger sense of themselves, which will be used to propel them towards their personal physical limits.Through energetic play, a range of physical approaches to performance will be explored. This work will be combined with an investigation into different uses of space and how a story can be told clearly through an imaginative use of scale and mimed imagery.

  At the end of this course participants will have:▪

• A stronger sense of their own body and presence 
• Learned various approaches to creating solo and ensemble work 
• Gained valuable technical skills in stagecraft 
• The ability to create rich, imaginative worlds and share vivid stories.

WORKSHOP TUTOR

British-born Kate Higginbottom is a performer, choreographer and director. She studied at Cambridge University, Ecole de Théâtre Jaques Lecoq Paris, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance London and the European Dance Development Centre in Holland. Throughout her career she has worked with many companies including Theatre O, Complicite, Nicole & Martin, Creation Theatre, Adverse Camber, English National Opera, Vanessa Cook, and herdeg&desponds. Her film credits include The Libertine and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
