Are you of Mixed Heritage*?

Do you like food? And enjoy cooking?
Taking photos? Making videos?
Just generally being creative?

Do you want to share your stories with other young people of mixed heritage over a delicious picnic?

Then join me, live artist Sebastian H-W (of mixed Hispanic/Latinx and Caucasian heritage) for a one-day intercultural cooking and creative workshop. I’m going to set up some make-shift kitchens where we can cook up, dish out and create new photos, video and digital stories together about our shared mixed experiences.

“I came to the UK in 1997. When I arrived I was tired of being asked where I was “from-from”, called “mixed up” or racial slurs that weren’t even close to who I am, or where my parents came from. Of having to justify, or testify, or give a percentage to my identities so that people could understand. I wanted to make my own story, in my own words.”

Now I’m eager to hear your story about what it’s like being of mixed heritage in the UK today.
 

*What do I mean by “Mixed Heritage”?
Good question: To me, it means people of more than one racial, cultural or national background, ancestry, place and sense of belonging; of being more than one, non-singular, not-mono, multiple, complex, many. But I guess I really want to keep it as broad and open as possible - so what does it mean to you?

I’ll provide all the equipment, utensils, crockery, cutlery and creative tools and tech for the workshop. You just need to bring your prepared ingredients, technology and most importantly, your stories. I can pay for your travel costs, food and ingredients if you bring your receipts to the workshop.

All you need to do is let me know who you are, why you’re interested, and what foods from your cultures you want to bring and cook.
