Description

Susan Merrick, FILIA Artist in Residence has been running her project Statements in Semaphore for six months now.  With funding help from Arts Council England she is running her residency with Women's Human Rights Charity FiLiA.

Statements in Semaphore has three main aims:

To connect women and women artists through creativity and create spaces for dialogue.

To produce work for exhibition that allows the participants to have access to the art world and the audience/art world access to their work.

To respond to the project artistically in the lead artists own practice producing work for exhibition in October.

Logistically the project involves facilitating a total of 12 workshops with women from two different organisations, Women in Prison and You Trust Hampshire. Along with the organisations Susan is also working with several incredible Artists who are running the creative workshops. Leah Thorn, Cate Field, Rebecca Harris and Amy Dignam.

Susan reports 'After many months of organising and planning it has been wonderful to start the workshops and begin seeing conversations start to happen between us all. As an artist working with a research based practice I wanted to find spaces where the conversations were not only academic but related to real life and issues of women in their own communities. The best way to do this was to work with FiLiA and set up these spaces myself'.

The project will finish at the end of the year and will culminate in a large exhibition as part of FiLiA'a annual conference Feminism in London 2017. This will take place Oct 14th and 15th at London Institute of Education. For more information about the project please visit http://ift.tt/2tmeayu
