Acrylic paintings by Weston-super-Mare artist Jack Hicks. Jack has a wealth of drawings made from life which he uses and continues to make, as a reference and physical/mental exercise for his paintings back in his studio at the Old Town Quarry. As well as direct visual observation, he responds to the sense of a place's past and the feeling of its present. Further decisions are made in how he composes and constructs his paintings so that they have their own, different presence but still embody the history of the process used to create them, which starts before any paint even reaches the canvas. When it does, the application varies considerably across the picture plane from thinned paint poured from above, to calligraphic brush marks, to areas blocked out and scraped flat with the edge of a palette knife. His most recent painting was done completely from memory and invention, and is a spring-board for the next.

A teacher of art, Jack went part-time a couple of years ago allowing him more time for his own artwork. He is very enthusiastic about the direction it is going in and this exhibition shows the recent development of his work at an exciting time in his career.

He has previously exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Institute of Contemporary Arts, Wells Art Contemporary, Bath Society of Artists, A2 Gallery (Wells), the Royal West of England Academy and Devizes Museum. Influences include Graham Sutherland and Paul Nash.

You can look through a few of his sketchbooks in the gallery and there are also some prints and cards available to buy at very reasonable prices for their quality. He has sold some of his recent paintings and continues to sell, so don't miss this opportunity to see those he still has; carefully curated in this exhibition which runs until Tuesday 4th July.
