Description
In conjunction with the UK premiere ofMad Man Sad Woman by Chilean playwright Juan Radrigán, there will be rehearsed readings of two new Chilean plays on 24 June. These will be of interest to anyone involved in theatre-in-translation, Latin America, and/or artistic directors/programmers looking for innovative new work. The schedule is:
15.30-16.30: Reading 1
Medusa, by Ximena Carrera, translated by Catherine Boyle, with Cristóbal Pizarro
Directed by Cristóbal Pizarro (Interdram, interdram.cl)
In Medusa three women, who have been captured and imprisoned as left-wing insurgents and broken under torture, live a weekend of crisis as their lives as informers for the Pinochet regime force them into personal and moral dilemmas with which they find it increasingly difficult to live.
17.00-18.00: Reading 2
Super Heroes, by Alexis Moreno Muñoz, translated by Catherine Boyle and Alejandro Franco
Directed by Alejandro Franco (Founder and Director, Teatro Manifiesto)
Super Heroes tells the story of a group of alienated public servants who work in an office located in any city hall, in which violence, nostalgia, failure and friendship are the basis of an absurd life where the definition of what is evil and justice does not matter anymore. However, these public servants were once Super Heroes, and it’s time for them to be Super Heroes again.
In addition, on 29 June, there will be a post-show panel titled 'Voices in Translation', featuring representatives from Out of the Wings (outofthewings.org) and Legal Aliens (legalalienstheatre.com), talking about innovative approaches to translation, including collaborative approaches.
