Each year 50 peers from across the UK and international performance community come together in Edinburgh for 3 weeks to participate in a peer led, peer-to-peer critical dialogue around excellence and evolving form in contemporary performance.  This process is the Total Theatre Awards.

Developed for the benefit of artists, the sector and audiences, the Total Theatre Awards have over the last two decades, blazed a trail of recognition for independent artists and companies creating innovative, artist-led theatre and performance.

Resisting too narrow a definition of the term ‘total theatre’ the awards focus on artists and companies leading innovative work beyond the classical cannon and new writing – working within the fields of devised theatre, live art, visual performance, mime, puppetry, physical theatre, experimental theatre, dance, clown, circus, street, immersive, outdoor, site specific performance and more.

Total Theatre Awards are assessed and judged by two peer panels including presenters, programmers, critics, producers, academics and artists who collectively engage in a rigorous and robust two stage process.

In total over 25 Assessors and 16 Judges will see over 500 eligible shows, over 1400 performances and engage in over 35 hours of critical dialogue, debate and discussion. The Total Theatre Short List of around 30 shows will be announced on Thursday 18 August and the Awards announced on Thursday 25 August. 

The Awards Categories for 2016 are: 

• Circus (presented in partnership with Jacksons Lane)
• Dance (presented in partnership with The Place)
• Emerging (with a £500 prize supported by Farnham Maltings)
• Experimentation, Innovation & Playing with Form 
• Physical & Visual Theatre

Artists, venues and interested parties presenting shows at the 2016 Edinburgh Festival Fringe are invited to register eligible shows to be considered for the Total Theatre Awards. Work by artists and companies at various stages of their professional development will be considered, however we do not consider work by student companies.

Completed forms should be emailed to awards@totaltheatre.org.uk by 9am on Monday 1 August 2016.  Artists and Companies cannot register shows after 9am on Monday 1 August 2016.
