Description
People’s History Museum in Manchester are currently working on an exciting community-led project to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act, which partially decriminalised homosexual acts. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Never Going Underground: The fight for LGBT+ rights will focus on the fight for equality for those identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and other gender and sexuality minorities (LGBT+). The project will include a major programme of events including a landmark exhibition to open in February 2017 developed by a team of Community Curators.
In addition, we will host a series of community exhibitions that will complement the themes and ideas of Never Going Underground. Two slots are available for exhibitions that focus on LGBT+ history, contemporary issues, or which feature LGBT+ artists. Proposals are invited from organisations, community groups and individuals who wish to show short-term high-quality exhibitions.
For groups or individuals who wish to exhibit who have no external funding, we have a small budget of up to £500 per exhibition slot for production costs.
Anyone can apply to exhibit whether you are an individual, a group or an organisation. Applications will be assessed on the following criteria:
-
Relevance – exhibitions will complement the themes and ideas of Never Going Underground and will focus on LGBT+ history, contemporary issues or feature LGBT+ artists.
-
Audience – exhibitions allow working people and disenfranchised groups a chance to tell and examine their history, encouraging wide access, increasing visitor numbers and raising the museum profile, creating new audiences. Please outline your target audience for the exhibition.
-
Quality – exhibitions will be high quality. All applications that meet the criteria will be assessed by a panel of PHM staff and community representatives. Please be clear, concise and write in plain English.
Applications assessed: September 2016
