Description

Young people from Wigan, Burnley and Hull have helped create a futuristic depiction of what life might be like in their local community in 2065, as part of Northern Powerhouse: Last Towns Standing – a thought-provoking online text adventure game and touring exhibition to be showcased in local libraries across the North of England.

Exhibiting at Bransholme Library, Hull from Tuesday 10 May - Saturday 11 June – the online “text adventure” game and accompanying exhibition is inspired by interactive fictional games popularised in the late 80s to mid 90s, allowing players to use text commands to control characters and influence the environment. Northern Powerhouse: Last Towns Standing is set fifty years in the future, where Wigan, Burnley and Hull are the last northern towns standing.

Created by acclaimed, arts collective, Re-Dock and young individuals from across Wigan, Burnley and Hull, it is part of Networked Narrative - an exciting project aimed at using art and technology to inspire and empower young people, working in libraries and communities across the North.

The accompanying exhibition Northern Powerhouse 2065, showcases objects from the game, including new modes of communication such as emoji gloves, a FutureGen lab swipe card and the sacred ‘book’; playfully exploring the story. To view all the objects (known as "artefakes") click here.

Northern Powerhouse 2065 will then travel to Leeds Central Library, Accrington Library, Golborne Library, St Helens Library and Wigan Youth Zone. To celebrate the end of the tour, it will exhibit at FACT in 2017 and inside a library in Liverpool.

Networked Narrative consists of four main partners – The Foundation for Arts and Creative Technology (FACT), Hull Culture & Leisure, Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles and Lancashire County Council, together with smaller partners.

The project is supported by public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England, through their Strategic Touring programme.
