Blue Monkey Network presents Laura Fitzgerald, Field Research

Laura Fitzgerald is an Irish artist based in London and Inch, Co. Kerry. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2013 and in the same year she was recipient of the WW Solo Award, an ongoing annual award that seeks to support up and coming artists working at all stages of their career*. Since 2013 Laura has received a number of professional development awards in Ireland and the U.S. and her work has been shown at screenings and in exhibitions in London, Ireland and New York.
For Blue Monkey’s event, we will show video work from Laura’s ongoing Field Researchcollection. In these short videos the Artist constructs narratives on daily walks within her local area in which she spontaneously engages with events which may erupt en route such as: cows breaking out onto the road, sheep crossing her path and passing by graveyards. Through these works, the Artist is deploying the small nothingness that exists between events and actions to take a sometimes humorous look at the notion of art practice and contemporary art world coexisting in the everyday.
These films form a fantastic starting point for a discussion about the way we work as artists and the anxieties and insecurities we all harbour, as well as raising many questions about the art world we operate in, hierarchies within it, and the role and status of the curator and networks. The film screening will be followed by time for discussion and debate around the many questions raised.
